XI YOU JI: DASHENG NAO TIANGONG {JOURNEY TO THE WEST: THE GREAT SAINT CAUSES CHAOS IN HEAVEN} {PT. 3 OF 25} {#99 (2)} {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)

Summary

The first of two programs on this tape. Part three of twenty-five in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese supernatural-fantasy novel, "Journey to the West," written by Wu Chengen in the mid-1500s. This adaptation follows the journey of the Tang monk Sanzang and his three pupils, detailing their adventures with monsters and gods as they travel to the Western Heaven seeking the three higher Buddhist scriptures. In part three the warrior gods fail to triumph over the monkey king Sun Wukong and he wanders around Heaven causing all sorts of trouble. In this installment, the Jade Emperor sends many warrior gods to capture Wukong, but no god can successfully complete the task, so the Jade Emperor gives Wukong the title of "Qitian Dasheng" (Grand Saint Equal to Heaven) to make peace with him. Wukong gladly accepts the title and the permission to wander freely around Heaven. Seeing that Wukong causes trouble wherever he goes, the Jade Emperor gives Wukong the task of overseeing the "Pantao Yuan" (Garden of Celestial Peaches) in the hope that he will have something to do and no longer have time to cause trouble. Instead of taking care of the peaches, Wukong eats all the ripe peaches, which keep the eater from aging. Seven Fairies come to pick peaches for a heavenly banquet to be given by the Jade Emperor's mother, but they can find no more that are ripe. When Wukong hears that he is not invited to the banquet, he disguises himself as another god and goes to the banquet ahead of time. He eats all the good food and drinks all the good wine before the other gods arrive. Wukong, by now quite drunk, enters the living quarters of the god Taishang Laojun and eats all his magic pills, which give immortality. Finally, Wukong goes back to his cave with all the remaining food and drink for his fellow monkeys. After the Jade Emperor learns of the things Wukong has done, he becomes enraged and sends 100,000 gods to kill Wukong, but yet again not one can defeat him. The Goddess of Mercy suggests that Erlang Shen, a powerful warrior god, fight Wukong. With the help of Taishang Laojun, who is very angry with Wukong for stealing his magic pills, Erlang Shen temporarily captures Wukong. Taishang Laojun then tries to burn Wukong to ashes by putting him in a gigantic cauldron, but Wukong he emerges unscathed after forty-nine days. Once Wukong is free, he fights and triumphs over all the gods again, and the Jade Emperor decides to ask Rulai Fozu (the Grand Buddha) for help as a last resort.
