MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: WILLIAM S. PALEY TELEVISION FESTIVAL 2002: ALIAS {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This evening's presentation honors "Alias," a dramatic action series about Sydney Bristow, who leads a double life as a graduate student by day and a CIA double agent by night. Los Angeles Museum director Barbara Dixon moderates. First, Dixon introduces the panelists: co-executive producer Ken Olin; producer Sarah Caplan; cast members Greg Grunberg, Kevin Weisman, Carl Lumbly, Bradley Cooper, Merrin Dungey, Michael Vartan, Ron Rifkin, Victor Garber, and Jennifer Garner; and creator/executive producer J.J. Abrams. Abrams introduces the episode that is about to be screened, which is seen in almost finished form; it has not yet aired. After the screening, Abrams talks briefly about the genesis of the idea for "Alias"; he also recalls pitching the show to the network and casting Jennifer Garner in the role of Sydney. Olin and Abrams go on to discuss the production of "Alias," dwelling in particular on the program's writing and the enthusiasm of the production team. Each cast member then recalls being cast, shares impressions of the series, and reveals what he or she finds attractive about it. Caplan describes the difficulty of putting together this complicated production, after which Dixon opens the seminar to questions from the audience. While responding to questions, the panelists discuss the following topics, among others: Garner's costumes; how far in advance the plot of the program is laid out; the panelists' belief that "Alias" is something special; the possibility of a love affair between the characters of Vaughn and Sydney; the sets used for the show; Garner's current success; and the development of Garner's and Abrams's careers over time.

(This tape includes the "Alias" episode "Q & A." This episode is part of the Museum's collection and may also be viewed separately. See T:69579 for a summary.)
