CONFERENCIA DE MADRID {MADRID PEACE CONFERENCE}
{SPANISH} (TV)
Summary
This late-night program focuses on the Madrid Peace
Conference at the end of its first day. It opens with a
montage of images from the conflict between Israel and
Palestine, which the conference hopes to alleviate.
Host Julian Nieto introduces his main guests, historians
Ju‡n Pando and Manuel Coma and journalist JosŽ Virgilio
Colchero.Ê The four discuss what they see as the
highlights of this first day, including Dutch foreign
minister Hans van den BroekÕs speech, representing the
views of the old Europe, and Egyptian minister of
foreign affairs Amre MoussaÕs speech, which they view
as non-aggressive toward Israel. They also touch on a
few of the key issues under negotiation -- the water
problem, the land dispute, and the frontier-security
issue.Ê They add that the second day of the conference
will have a lot more weight as it will reveal more about
the positions of the Israeli and Palestine delegations.
The group comments on the historic importance of this
event, and Nieto introduces an Israeli participant at
the conference, Mijael Eligal of the Israeli embassy to
Spain. Eligal touches on the complexity of the conflict
and comments on the friendship between Israel and the
U.S. He leaves, to be replaced by Radwan Abu Ayyasi
from the Palestinian delegation. Ayyasi stresses his
colleagues' desire for peace in general but mentions the
divisions on the issue among Arabs. After he leaves,
the remaining guests touch on the difficulties,
ambiguities, and confusions of the conference. Nieto
shows the agenda for the morning just past at the Royal
Palace in Madrid, which included Felipe Gonz‡lezÕs
opening speech, followed by speeches by Bush and
Gorbachev and reactions from a number of delegations.Ê
After a short report from Faustino Alvarez about the
mass media present at the conference, the historians
suggest that the absolute minimum this conference will
have to achieve is a certain autonomy for Palestine.Ê
Next, the group talks to editor JosŽ Benarroch in
Jerusalem, who tells viewers about public and political
opinion in Israel about the conference. He introduces
Abi Milguir, the general secretary of a kibbutz in the
Golan region, an area subject to negotiation at the
conference.Ê Milguir emphasizes the concern and fear in
this vital region, and the guests in the studio comment
on the importance of the Golan, as well as other issues,
including the fate of the Gaza Strip and the dispute
over the city of Jerusalem.Ê Nieto briefly discusses the
history of the conflict, showing on a map the reduction
in Palestinian territory since 1949, and then he
receives a telephone report from Mar’a J. Hern‡ndez in
Moscow about the restoration of diplomatic ties with
Israel by Gorbachev. Next, Javier Monjas reports from
Tunisia about a number of issues, including PLO leader
Yasser ArafatÕs recent visit to Tunisia to drum up
support for the conference.Ê Bego–a Zubieta reports on
the current atmosphere at the Royal Palace, after which
Pando, Coma, and Colchero present their final
conclusions. They suggest that the two sides of the
Israeli-Palestinian issue are highly incompatible but
also note that the conference marks the start of an
irreversible process towards peace. Commercials
