MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: WILLIAM S. PALEY TELEVISION FESTIVAL 2002: UNDECLARED {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This evening honors "Undeclared," a comedy series about a group of six college friends working out the challenges of life at the University of Northeastern California. Museum television curator David Bushman moderates. Bushman opens the evening by describing "Undeclared" and the critical acclaim it has received. He introduces the panelists: creator and executive producer Judd Apatow; producer Victor Hsu; director Jake Kasdan; and cast members David Krumholtz, Loudon Wainwright, Samm Levine, Jason Segel, Jarrett Grode, Timm Sharp, Carla Gallo, Seth Rogen, Charlie Hunnam, and Jay Baruchel. The evening begins with Apatow introducing two new episodes of the show -- "Hal and Hillary" and "Eric's POV" -- which are then screened in their entirety. Afterward, the panelists take the stage and answer questions on such topics as: how the show was cast; how the show is plotted; the connection between "Undeclared" and Apatow's previous show "Freaks & Geeks"; Apatow's love for Wainwright's music; the appeal of the show to its fans; improv on the show; how the show is directed; how Rogen got onto the show's writing staff; and Apatow's comedy idols -- Gary Shandling and James L. Brooks. Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: the DVD release of "Freaks & Geeks"; storylines based on real-life experiences; the role of story editor on a production; the show having no laugh track; why the show is only a half-hour; season two plans; dealings with the Fox network; why Monica Keena isn't at this seminar; Hunnam's work on the original British "Queer as Folk"; and Apatow's email spat with the producers of "That '70s Show."

(This tape includes the "Undeclared" episodes "Hal and Hillary" (T:69169) and "Eric's POV" (T:69170). These episodes are part of the Museum's collection and may be viewed separately.)
