COLOR OF FRIENDSHIP, THE (TV)
Summary
In this made-for-television docudrama, the Dellums
family, a politically active African-American family in
Washington, D.C., inadvertently takes in an adolescent,
white, female South African exchange student who has
been raised with a racist world view. Set in 1977, the
story opens as young Piper Dellums begs her
congressman father Ron to agree to an exchange-student
program that would bring a young African girl to stay at
the Dellums household for four months. Ron is extremely
busy at work -- he is one of the major political
opponents of South Africa's system of apartheid -- but
he tells Piper that she can go ahead with her plan.
Meanwhile, young Mahree Bok of Dundee, South Africa,
learns that she is going to stay with a congressman's
family in the United States. Mahree is white, and her
father is a police officer. As Mahree plans her
departure, Officer Bok bursts through the front door.
"Good news!" he shouts. "We captured Stephen Biko!"
Mrs. Bok congratulates her husband. "Maybe our country
can have some peace now," she sighs. When Piper and
Mahree finally meet in the airport in D.C., both are
shocked into speechlessness. Mahree locks herself into
a room in the Dellums' house while Ron encourages Piper
to help Mahree get placed in a new home. As Mahree sits
in her self-exile, she remembers her father's taunts
that she wouldn't be able to last a week and decides she
will do her best to overcome her conditioning and try to
find happiness with Piper and her family. This program
is closed-captioned.
