BBC WORLD (TWO SEGMENTS) {TERRORIST ATTACKS} (TV)

Summary

This tape from BBC World News presents portions coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The tape opens in the middle of an interview between an unidentified anchor and former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, which is intermittently interrupted by live shots of the rescue efforts in New York City. After Barak's comments, BBC World goes live to Boston for a statement by Logan Airport public safety and security chief Joe Lawless, who tries to sort out the distinctions between the different airplanes that were hijacked. The anchor then speaks with counterterrorism expert Mike Bluestone, and footage from Washington, D.C., is shown over a report by Rob Watson about the mood in the U.S. capital. In the second segment, reporter Johnny Diamond lists the myriad closings of official businesses in New York City. Anchor Steven Cole checks in with reporter Jane Standley in New York, and Steven Cviic reports that a car believed to have been rented by the terrorists has been impounded from Logan airport. Cole runs an excerpt from George W. Bush's televised speech from a Florida elementary school, in which the U.S. president states that the plane crashes of the morning are apparently a terrorist attack. This is followed by a clip of Prime Minister Tony Blair, who affirms that Britain "stands shoulder to shoulder with [its] American friends." Next, Caroline Hawley reports from Jerusalem that a panicked Israel has closed its borders. Financial reporter Jane Sinclair then announces that European stock markets will open later in the day. After a snippet in which David Willis interviews blood donors in Barstow, California, the tape concludes with a snatch of speech from Pope John Paul II, who expresses his grief and counsels prayer.
