Summary
One in this dramatic series chronicling the love affairs
of two American girls living in Beijing who become
involved with the inhabitants of a traditional Chinese
courtyard. In this episode, Miss Ji finds out why her
mother left her to Mr. Lu, and Tianming reveals his
feelings towards Jessie. The neighbors gather and
berate Miss Ji in front of her mother, Mrs. Ji, for her
behavior in the courtyard. Mr. Lu reveals that, when
Miss Ji was young, he promised Mrs. Ji he would look
after her because he loved Mrs. Ji. Despite his best
efforts to make Miss Ji a good person, he says, she was
always cruel to him. While walking home that night,
Jessie once again tells Tianming that she wants to be
with him. Tianming finally admits that he is captivated
by Jessie and wants to be together, and then they kiss.
The next day, Tianliang sees Mr. Lu selling toy figures
next to Mrs. Ji's pushcart and says that they compliment
one another. Qingzi is out riding his pedicab when he
is stopped by Tianliang who tells him that a girl wants
to meet him. Tianliang and Qingzi switch places, and
Tianliang rides the bike to the bookstore so that Qingzi
may meet his "dream girl." When Miss Hua arrives,
Qingzi tells Tianliang to drive them to the park, but
Tianliang says he cannot because he has a prior
engagement with Louise's parents. However, Qingzi
persuades him and they ride to the park. Tianliang,
running late already, is futher delayed when a man,
unaware that Tianliang is not a pedicab driver, tells
him he wants to go to the opposite end of town.
Tianliang is unable to switch back with Qingzi because
it would ruin his date, so he decides to drive the man
across town, but not before stopping off to apologize to
Louise and her family about his inability to attend
lunch. At the dormitory later that day, Louise is on
her way out when Jessie says that Robert is at the
hospital and she should come find out what's going on;
however, Louise is supposed to be tutoring a young girl
in English and cannot go. As the episode ends, Mrs. Ji
leaves her daughter's home after attempting to convince
her to be sensible; Miss Ji, filled with anger and
resentment, cannot understand why her mother gave her
daughter to someone else to look after.
