BBC NEWS 24 SPECIAL REPORT {TERRORIST ATTACKS}
(TV)

Summary

The first of two programs on this tape, this BBC News 24 offering presents coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, one day after the attack. The program opens as anchor Nisha Pillay discusses the "yo-yo-ing" of the European stock markets. Jeff Randall, the program's business editor, mentions that American consumer confidence is low and that the world economy is on the brink of a recession. Afghan correspondent Kate Clark discusses the fear in Afghanistan that the U.S. will launch a raid on that country. She also discusses Osama bin Laden's possible involvement in the attacks. Clips show the rescue effort currently going on in New York. George Joffi, from the Center for International Studies at Cambridge, discusses the anti-Western sentiments in the Middle East. David Willis reports from Barstow, California, on what this small town is doing for the relief effort. Next, Andrew Kennedy, a U.S. intelligence expert, answers Jim Fish's questions about the attacks. Clips show corpses lined-up in Washington, D.C. An unnamed reporter discusses the flight paths of the four hijacked airplanes while a graphic illustrates them. Clips show vigils going on around the United States. The wife and mother of Mark Bingham, a victim on one of the hijacked planes, tell of the phone call they received from him during his final minutes. A clip in which U.S. President George W. Bush speaks closes out the program, which begins and ends abruptly.
