Summary
The first of two programs on this tape. The premiere
episode in this dramatic series about a team of
investigative police officers in the Public Safety
Bureau of Gansu Province, Shazhou City, on the northwest
border of China. As the episode opens, team leader Yang
Liqiu arrives at the station where he and his men face a
reprimand from their superior, Bureau Chief Deng Hong,
because they haven't found any physical evidence to
convict a local drug addict, Ma Li, for killing his wife
fifteen days before. Since fifteen days is the maximum
time the law allows the police to detain any suspect,
Deng Hong now orders Liqiu to release Ma Li, despite
everyone's firm belief that he is the murderer. Liqiu
and his assistant team leader, Liu Han, reluctantly
drive Ma Li back to his home, where Ma Li is not
welcomed by his adolescent mute son (nicknamed the
Mute) who witnessed his father killing his mother.
Liqiu and Liu Han, hoping for some evidence to link Ma
Li to the murder, return to the crime scene, a deserted
building site, where the team's dog trainer, Zhou
Guoqing, and his two best police dogs are searching for
evidence. But Guoqing and his dogs still have not
produced any evidence, frustrating Liqiu and Liu Han.
Liqiu suggests Liu Han take a few days off since his
wife is very close to labor, but Liu Han believes this
is a critical time for the team and turns down the kind
offer. Meanwhile back in town, the paralyzed street
singer Li Tie is befriended by a poor poet named Ge Mu.
Ten years ago, Li Te was also a member of the
investigative team and became paralyzed while trying to
rescue a girl from being raped, and Ge Mu had written
about this particular incident. Back at the station,
the team's female party affairs liaison, Tian Ruyu,
receives a call from Liqiu's wife, Yang Qingqing, saying
she wants Liqiu to appear before divorce court. Ruyu
goes to Qingqing's house to talk her out of the divorce
idea, but Qingqing won't listen. Overnight, one of
Guoqing's dogs finally finds a kitchen knife, which the
forensics lab quickly confirms is the murder weapon.
Liqiu and his team rush to arrest Ma Li again, but upon
their arrival at Ma Li's house, they find to their
surprise that the Mute has already stabbed Ma Li to
death.
