Summary
The second of two programs on this tape. Episode two in
this dramatic series about the average, middle-class
Tong family in Shanghai, China. Episode two deals with
the hospitalization of elderly father Tong Fuchang and
reveals a past love affair between the oldest daughter,
Tong Jianju, and the hospital president, Gao Shida. As
the episode opens, the young Navy officer Xie An barges
into a meeting and forces Shida to give Fuchang a bed.
Xie An and the middle son Tong Jianqiang then accompany
Fuchang for a series of tests before he is placed in an
ICU bed. The youngest daughter, Tong Jianlan, tries to
officially admit her father to the hospital but doesnÕt
have the required deposit, so she goes home and phones
her husband Luo Ping, who then borrows the money from
his co-workers. After admitting their father, Jianlan
and Jianju listen to the doctor's diagnosis: Fuchang
has suffered a major stroke and won't live more than six
months. The doctor tells them that even if Fuchang
recovers some brain functions, he will be paralyzed, so
the siblings decide to call all of their relatives and
friends and to take turns looking after Fuchang. Jianju
stays with her father through the night and is
befriended by another ICU patient's wife, Huang Yuzhen,
who gives her some food. The next morning, Jianqiang
tells his young female assistant Chunmei to look after
their small bookshop, since he will be in the hospital
for the next few days. Jianlan drags her husband Luo
Ping and young daughter Luo Wangwang to the hospital.
Jianshe goes to his mother-in-law's house to ask his
wife Hu Jindi to visit his father, but Jindi refuses to
go, still smarting over her perceived slight by the Tong
family. The middle daughter, Tong Jianmei, also
prepares to take her husband Yuan Zhen and young
daughter Yuan Yuan to the hospital. Meanwhile, Jianju
bumps into Shida, an old lover of hers, in the hospital.
Jianju pretends not to recognize him, but Shida finds
out why she's there and promises to assign more doctors
to treat her father. Except for Jindi, all the
relatives and friends of the Tong family begin to arrive
at the hospital, including the neighborhood woman Acai,
some of Fuchang's old co-workers, Xie An, Ziwei, and
Jianju's college-age son, Tong Shabo. Fuchang suffers
another stroke, so Shida and some other doctors come to
revive him. The others leave for the night, except for
Jianqiang who remains to look after his father. Both
Shida and Jianju return to their respective homes and
dig out old pictures to reminisce about their past love
affair.
