Summary
The second of two programs on this tape. Episode four
in this dramatic series about the average, middle-class
Tong family in Shanghai, China. In episode four, the
oldest son, Tong Jianguo, continues to care for his
hospitalized father, Tong Fuchang, and tries to bring
family peace by appeasing the unsatisfied youngest
daughter-in-law, Hu Jindi. The episode opens on Jianguo
and his youngest sister, Tong Jianlan, cleaning their
father, while another patient's wife, Huang Yuzhen,
comes to chat with them. It turns out that Yuzhen's
husband, Cai Zhiyuan, is an old high school friend of
Jianguo's, and Jianguo promises to visit him later in
the afternoon. Back at home, tensions run high between
Jindi and the rest of the family: mother Fang Xiuyun
and middle daughter Tong Jianmei argue with her over
old grievances, and when Jindi's husband Tong Jianshe
returns with a bag of pills for his father, Jindi
smashes them to pieces. Jianguo tries to moderate,
advising Jianmei to treat Jindi better and placate his
mother Xiuyun. Back at the hospital, nurses come to
change Fuchang's bedding, and Jianlan finds the pictures
that her oldest sister, Tong Jianju, had left there the
other night. When confronted by Jianlan, Jianju admits
that she knew the hospital president, Gao Shida, from
their days in Shazhou, but lies about the their love
affair. But Jianlan wonÕt give up and follows Jianju
home, so Jianju finally admits that Shida was the first
and only love of her life. Back at the Tong's
apartment, Xiuyun catches Jianguo up on family matters,
including her worries about her two youngest sons,
Jianqiang and Jianshe. As a result, Jianguo visits
Jianqiang at his bookshop and asks him how well he is
doing. Jianquo also plans a family meeting to discuss
the long-term care of his father.
