
CROSSING THE PACIFIC -- PRESIDENT JIANG'S VISIT TO
THE UNITED STATES IN 1997 {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)
Summary
This documentary chronicles Chinese President Jiang
Zemin's visit to the United States in 1997. Honolulu,
Hawaii, is the first stop of the trip. After the
welcome ceremony, President Jiang goes to Pearl Harbor
to see the site of the Japanese surprise attack on
December 7, 1941. The Chinese leader visits the USS
Arizona memorial and lays a wreath in memory of those
killed in the attack. Later, he attends a reception
banquet held by the mayor of Honolulu and the governor
of Hawaii. The program moves on to the historic town of
Williamsburg, Virginia, President Jiang's second stop.
There he visits the British governors' residence and
watches colonial dances. President Jiang then journeys
to Washington, D.C., and Vice President Al Gore receives
him at Andrews Air Force Base. On the morning of
October 29, President Clinton and his wife Hillary
Rodham Clinton greet Jiang at the White House. The
American president holds a welcoming ceremony on the
south lawn. The two leaders make speeches, after which
they give a joint press conference at the White House.
They also publish a joint communiquŽ. At the Capitol,
the Senate and the House of Representatives have a
breakfast meeting with President Jiang, at which the
two sides exchange ideas extensively. President Jiang
is then seen making a speech at a banquet held jointly
by six American and Chinese organizations. He stresses
the importance of the Taiwan issue in Sino-U.S.
relations. In the next sequence, Vice President Gore
holds a luncheon banquet for President Jiang, at which
old and new friends meet. President Jiang also meets
the staffs of the Chinese Embassy and of Chinese
organizations in the U.S., along with Chinese students
going to school in the U.S. At night, President Clinton
holds a banquet in honor of President Jiang and his wife
Wang Yeping, and after the banquet the two couples enjoy
a concert by the National Symphony Orchestra. President
Jiang is next seen on a trip to Philadelphia, where he
visits his college teacher, Professor Gu. President
Jiang also visits Drexel University and Pennsylvania
University. He moves on to Boston, where he tours
Harvard University. Next, viewers see President Jiang
arriving at the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street,
declaring the market open. Later he visits a few large
corporations, including IBM, AT&T, and Lucent
Technologies. When he arrives in Los Angeles, President
Jiang visits General Motors and Hughes Technologies, and
the Chinese community in Los Angeles holds a welcoming
party for him. Finally, President Jiang is leaving Los
Angeles for China. The film ends with snapshots taken
during his trip; comments on his trip by the major
newspapers; and President Jiang's own voice, saying that
he hopes the world will be a better place in the new
century.
