Summary
The first of two programs on this tape. Part three of chapter one in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese novel, "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," written by Luo Guanzhong in the late 1300s. This adaptation closely follows the novel, telling the story of three kingdoms competing for the unification of China. Chapter 1, part three tells the story of how Dong Zhuo dominates over the capital and becomes the defacto ruler. Having escorted the two young emperors, Xie and Bian, back to the palace, Dong Zhuo and his army remain in the capital in the name of protecting the newly restored order of the Han Dynasty, which is now officially ruled by the young Emperor Shao (current official title of Prince Bian), but in reality Dong Zhuo and his army roam the capital with no one to challenge them. As this installment begins, Dong Zhuo discusses with one of his advisers, Li Ru, his wish to remove the young Emperor Shao and replace him with the even younger Prince Xie, so that he himself can become the defacto ruler. Li Ru warns Dong Zhuo that, in history, men who removed one emperor to replace him with another were seen as the enemies of all people and were eventually murdered or came to horrible deaths, but Dong Zhuo laughs dismissively in reply. A few days later, Dong Zhuo invites most of the high court officials to attend a banquet at his home and announces his wish to remove Emperor Shao and put Prince Xie on the throne. Seeing that many officials, like Ding Yuan, Yuan Shao, Lu Zhi, and Wang Yun, are all speaking up against his idea, Dong Zhuo reluctantly postpones his plans. Since action speaks louder than words during this chaotic time, Ding Yuan leads his own men to fight Dong Zhuo, and no one in Dong Zhuo's camp can defeat the mighty warrior named Lu Bu (Ding Yuan's adoptive son). Li Su, who is another adviser to Dong Zhuo and an old friend of Lu Bu, devises a plan to bring Lu Bu over to Dong Zhuo's camp. Li Su gives Lu Bu some jewelry and a great horse that was originally Dong ZhuoÕs favorite, and tells him how Dong Zhuo is making great history and Lu Bu should be on the winning side. After a few talks, Li Su successfully convinces Lu Bu to defect. Lu Bu then chops off Ding YuanÕs head and offers it to Dong Zhuo as a token of his defection. With the mighty Lu Bu on his side, Dong Zhuo feels that no one will challenge him anymore, so the next day he re-announces his wish to remove Emperor Shao and put Prince Xie on the throne. Once again, many officials protest his idea, and Yuan Shao even draws his sword to fight Dong Zhuo, but is easily defeated by Lu Bu. Seeing that no one can defeat Dong Zhuo and his men now, no other officials speak up, and Dong Zhuo concludes the meeting by announcing that the exchange of the throne will take place the next day. During the ceremony the next day, an official named Wu Fu tries to assassinate Dong Zhuo but again is easily defeated by Lu Bu, and Dong Zhuo kills Wu Fu with his own hands. Part three ends with the ceremony taking place as Dong Zhuo planned, removing Emperor Shao and placing the nine-year-old Prince Xie on the throne as Emperor Xian, leaving Dong Zhuo himself as the defacto ruler.
