Summary
The second of two programs on this tape. Episode six in
this dramatic series about a group of university
professors, staff, and their families living in a
communal apartment building in Shanxi Province.
Episode six focuses on the lunar New Year's celebration.
This episode begins with Zhu Erhu, sitting on a brand
new sofas and drinking imported Western wine, showing
off his newly remodeled apartment/office to Fan Zhiyuan
and Xiaoge. Next, Huyan Dong returns home to find a
message on a tape recorder left by his wife Yang Yang,
telling him that their three-year-old daughter Jingjing
is at Xiaoge's place and asks him to take care of her
during the next few days. Jingjing tells Xiaoge that
her parents are no longer talking and only communicate
by exchanging notes, and Xiaoge, who is already mad at
her father for going down to the village again, becomes
even more upset. Xiaoge's mood darkens even more when
a few days later she sees Zhiyuan and Ma Zhenzhen
cooking dinner together to welcome Zhiyuan's mother
home from Beijing. Zhiyuan and Zhenzhen are actually
pretending to be closer to make Erhu jealous, but Erhu
pretends not to notice them and leaves in a hurry to go
on a business trip. With Erhu away, his father Old Zhu
comes home on New Year's Eve to find the newly
remodeled apartment empty and unrecognizable.
Fortunately, his older son Dahu, daughter-in-law, and
grandson come to celebrate the New Year with him, and
Old Zhu is not left alone during the holiday season.
Meanwhile, Professor Fan comes back and is very
surprised by the welcome home dinner that Zhiyuan and
Zhenzhen have put together for her. The Ma family is
also having a good dinner. Xiaoge talks to Huyan alone
about his marriage troubles, but Huyan says he sees the
conflicts with his wife as challenges instead of
troubles, and that they will work them out somehow.
Huyan then invites Xiaoge to join his family for New
Year's celebration at his mother's place, but Xiaoge
declines, and Huyan leaves with Jingjing to go to his
mother's place. The same night, Huang Geng is hurt and
falls unconscious while he's helping some farmers in the
village. The village head Old Xu and a few farmers try
to carry him to a hospital, but they do not make much
progress on foot and try to catch a ride. Two trucks
pass them without stopping, but the second truck turns
out to have a napping Erhu in the back. Waking and
realizing what has happened, Erhu makes his driver go
back to pick them up. At the hospital door, Erhu sees
that the injured man is actually Huang Geng, so he
rushes back to the building to bring Xiaoge, who he
finds sitting in the dark avoiding the New Year's
celebrations, to the hospital. Once Professor Fan hears
that Huang Geng is hurt, she and Old Zhu also leave
their holiday celebrations to go to him. In the
hospital, Huang Geng is left in the hallway since there
is no "common" bed available. First, Erhu
unsuccessfully tries to get an "officer's" bed by
slipping some money to the doctor, and then Professor
Fan tries to get one with her status as university
president, but the doctor says Huang Geng must be a
professor himself to get an "officer's" bed. Episode
six ends with everyone in deep frustration and worry
over Huang Geng's condition.
