{DREAM OF RED MANSIONS: STRONGHEADED JINCHUAN
DIES OF SHAME} {#98} {PT. 14 OF 36} {MANDARIN
CHINESE} (TV)

Summary

The second of two programs on this tape. Part fourteen of thirty-six in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese novel, "Dream of Red Mansions," written by Cao Xueqin in the mid-1700s. While this adaptation follows the love triangle between the main male heir (Jia Baoyu) and his two female first cousins (Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai), it also shows the rise and fall of the four elite families (Jia, Wang, Shi, and Xue) of the novel. In this installment, Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu finally make up after their big fight in the previous installment; Baoyu flirts with a maid, which results in her suicide; Baoyu gives his female cousin, Shi Xiangyun, a pendant shaped like the mythical Chinese animal, the qilin; and a local official comes to Baoyu demanding the whereabouts of the male opera singer known as Qiguan. In part fourteen Baoyu goes to visit Daiyu, and they finally make up. But the next day, while Baoyu is visiting his mother (Lady Wang), he flirts with his mother's maid Jinchuan. Lady Wang, who was sleeping while her maid massaged her legs, wakes up, slaps Jinchuan, and throws her out of the household. Baoyu goes home angry and ashamed, and fights with his own maids, Xiren and Qingwen. A few days later, Shi Xiangyun, Baoyu's cousin, comes to visit, and Baoyu gives her a qilin pendant to match the one she already has. Daiyu is initially jealous until she overhears Baoyu telling Xiren that she is his favorite. He tells Xiren that he prefers Daiyu because she never says "stupid things" like Xiangyun and Xue Baochai do, who are always advising him to behave like a proper gentleman. When Baoyu tries to confess his love for Daiyu the next day, Daiyu shyly says she already understands his heart and goes away. On the same day, Lady Wang learns that Jinchuan, the maid she fired, has committed suicide; she feels very guilty, and Baochai comforts her. When Baoyu hears of Jinchuan's suicide, he goes to walk in silence, but his father soon calls him for another matter: on behalf of a prince, a local official has come to demand the whereabouts of the prince's beloved male opera singer, Qiguan. Qiguan, who has become good friends with Baoyu, is no longer returning to his master's (the prince's) household. After some reluctance, Baoyu reveals Qiguan's new address.
