ALERTA 112 {ALERT 112} {SPANISH} {TERRORIST ATTACKS} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of Spanish news magazine programs on recent national and international events. (The show's title, "Alerta 112," refers to Spain's emergency services phone number, which is 112 as opposed to 911 in the United States.) This tape presents coverage of the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as aired on Antena 3 (Spain). This program is divided into nine segments: the first seven concern the terrorist attacks, the last two are on recent murder trials in Spain. Anchor Esther Malag—n opens the program and introduces each report. The first report, narrated by Mar’a Cat—n, Gabriel Rela–o, and Iv‡n Carrasco, summarizes the events of September 11, including the plane crashes in New York and Washington and the collapse of the World Trade Center towers, and President George W. Bush's condemnation of the attacks. The following people are interviewed regarding the structure of the buildings, the rescue efforts, and the possibility of survivors being found: Joaqu’n S‡ez, subinspector of the Fire Department of Madrid; Juan Orellana, Chief of the Fire Department of Madrid, JosŽ Luis de Miguel, professor of the School of Architecture of Madrid, and Leoncio Inchausti, secretary of the canine unit of the National Police. The second segment, narrated by Silvia Fonseca and Joaqu’n Barrero, focuses on the preparation of the terrorists and what was required for them to carry out this attack. Interviewees include Angel Gallego, director of the Madrid-Barajas Airport; Mar’a Tejero and Arturo Rosas, flight attendants; Anacleto Villarroel, president of the Spanish Association of Civil Pilots; Gaspar de Vicente, director of air navigation; Luis Crespo, director of Aeromadrid School; and Carlos Carnicero, a victim of a hijacking. The interviewees comment on airport and airplane security, emergency codes used by pilots and flight attendants, and the possible training these terrorists might have received. The third segment, narrated by Javier Gallego and Juan Manuel CuŽllar, focuses on the role of national and international intelligence and the psychological aspect of the attacks. Interviewees include Coronel Diego Camacho, of defense department intelligence; Fernando S. Agust’n, defense expert; Rafael Calduch, professor of International Relations; and J.A. Garc’a Andrade, forensic psychiatrist. Images show Osama bin Laden delivering a speech with threatening the United States, the site of the bombings in the U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and the arrest in Alicante, Spain, of Mohammed ben Sakira, thought to be the third closest man to Osama bin Laden and who was charged for planning to attack the European Parliament. The fourth segment, narrated by Yazmina Razola and Joaqu’n Barreda, covers the rescue efforts in New York after the attacks on September 11. There are interviews with JosŽ A. LazuŽn, civil protection agent; Emilio Benito, spokesperson for SAMUR (Ambulance Services); Mercedes Pi–eiro, a nurse; Luis JimŽnez, emergency coordinator of the clinical hospital; and Ana Vallina, psychologist for SAMUR (Ambulance Services). Mostly they comment on the state of hospitals in the New York area, and the help they need to provide to victims' families. Images show Rudolph Giuliani taking charge of the situation. The fifth segment, narrated by Mart’n Herrero and Teo Plaza, focuses on the attack's victims, those on the planes, and those in the towers. It begins with a recording of a woman called Melissa trapped in one of the towers leaving a message for her husband Sean. There are interviews with JosŽ A. Garc’a Andrade, forensic psychiatrist; Adoraci—n Moreno, Red Cross psychiatrist; and Roberto Manrique, victim of a terrorist attack by ETA, the Spanish separatist terrorist group, and director of the Association for Victims of Terrorism. They discuss different levels of post-traumatic stress and the different ways of coping. Segment six, narrated by BelŽn Rey and Juan Antonio Barreda, shows images from films in which similar attacks are simulated, and they discuss the reality of an attack. They include interviews with Reyes Abades, coordinator of special effects; Guillermo Croizard, film director; Colin Arthur, special effects at Dream Factory; and Javier Armentos, specialist. They report that several films that were meant to air the week following the attacks, including "Independence Day" and "Die Hard," were cancelled due to the similarity of their content to the recent events. The seventh segment, narrated by Javier Gallego and Carlos Aguado, looks at the importance of cellular phones in assisting rescue efforts. There is an interview with Emilio Medina, one of the 123 passengers in a June 1998 hijacking, who put the police in touch with the plane's hijacker. Another interview is with JosŽ Luis G—mez, who was kidnapped in 1998 and placed in the trunk of his car; he also called the police with his cellphone. Fernando Conde, coordinator of emergency number 112 in Madrid, and Delf’n Delgado, firefighter for SERCAM (Madrid's Emergency Services), also talk about the importance of cellphones. Segment eight, narrated by Mar’a Cat—n, Gabriel Rela–o, and Juan Antonio Barreda, shifts to the trial of Dolores V‡zquez, accused of murdering her partner«s daughter, Roc’o B‡nico. There are images of the trial and of the people involved, including Alicia Hornos, the mother of the victim; Rosa Blanco Wanninkhov, sister of the victim; Antonio Jurado, boyfriend; and Ram—n Tejero, a priest in Mijas, the town where this all took place. The ninth and final segment, narrated by Ana Ansola and Jesœs A. S‡nchez, covers an attempted murder trial, where one Laura Fern‡ndez is accused of hiring two men to murder her husband, a respected lawyer, JosŽ Emilio Rodr’guez MenŽndez. The men who appear on trial are JosŽ Ignacio Rocha and Rafael Bravo. Accused of covering for them is Angel Su‡rez, and the lawyers involved in the case are Alicia Moreno and Jaime S‡enz de Brem—nd. There is also a brief comment made by Renata Pivonkova, the wife of one of the accused men.
