Summary
The second of two programs on this tape. Part six in this
series based on the novel by Lao She about an extended
family that embodies the Chinese nation's strength
during World War II. This installment begins with the
reaction of Qi Ruixuan to the news that his younger
brother Ruifeng wants to divide up the family property.Ê
He is angry at the idea -- and especially angry with its
timing.Ê The fundraising meeting for Mengshi's funeral
is embarrassingly quiet until Jinsan, Mengshi's
father-in-law, agrees to pay no more than two hundred
Yuan.Ê After the funeral attendants return from the
cemetery, Ruixuan and the others at home learn another
piece of shocking news: Mengshi's mother has killed
herself by striking her head against the coffin.Ê At
this moment, Lisi and Ruixuan find Qian Moyin in front
of the gate.Ê Though badly beaten by the Japanese, Qian
has managed to climb all the way back home.Ê By now
Qian knows that Guan Xiaohe is responsible for his
arrest by the Japanese.Ê Jinsan and Ruixuan accompany
Qian to the Guans' house to confront Guan Xiaohe, and
Jinsan beats Guan Xiaohe for his despicable deeds.Ê The
program ends as Ruifeng tells his father that Ruixuan
has joined Qian and Jinsan in beating Guan Xiaohe; he
predicts that the Guans will not let the matter go.
