MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SEMINAR SERIES, THE: 24 {TWENTY-FOUR}: A CONVERSATION WITH CAST AND PRODUCERS {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. Held at the Museum in Los Angeles and moderated by Barbara Dixon, director of the Museum, this seminar examines "24," a drama that looks at twenty-four hours in the life of counter-terrorism agent Jack Bauer in real time. Panelists include the show's creators and executive producers Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow as well as cast members Kiefer Sutherland (Jack Bauer), Elisha Cuthbert (Kim Bauer), Dennis Haysbert (Senator David Palmer), Sarah Clarke (Nina Meyers), and Penny Johnson (Sherrie Palmer). (Leslie Hope was unable to attend due to a last-minute commitment.) The seminar begins with a screening of highlights from season one. After the screening, Cochran and Surnow describe the origins of the show's concept, citing "In the Line of Fire" and "Day of the Jackal" as two particular inspirations. Next, Surnow discusses things that he "brought" to "24" from his last show "La Femme Nikita." Sutherland then talks about how he got the part of Bauer, before every other cast member on the panel addresses their particular casting: Cuthbert "acted like herself" on her audition; Haysbert tried to "be presidential"; Clarke wasn't cast until the first day of shooting; and Johnson's naivetŽ played a key part in her winning the part. Next, Cochran and Surnow discuss the "electric" response they received from the network when they pitched the idea, the uniqueness of running the show on two different channels (Fox and FX), and the writing process. Sutherland then discusses the upcoming DVD release of the first season and mentions how popular the show is overseas. Clarke talks about not finding out that Nina was a mole until very late in the season. Next, Cochran and Surnow discuss their initial fears for a second season as well as the "gutsiness" of killing Terri Bauer in the final episode. Next, an alternate ending to the season one finale is screened -- one in which Terri actually lives. After the screening, questions from the audience lead to an examination of the following topics: second season "issues" and plotlines; logistics of the series' seemingly unique multiple camera work; how September 11, 2001, has affected the show; the luck involved with casting decisions, for both the creators and the actors; writing for actors; and Sutherland's suggestion for season two.
