ANTENA 3 NOTICIAS {ATAQUE TERRORISTA CONTRA
ESTADOS UNIDOS CINTA 1} {NEWS: TERRORIST ATTACKS
AGAINST THE UNITED STATES, TAPE 1 OF 6} {TERRORIST
ATTACKS} {SPANISH} (TV)

Summary

Tape one of six. This Antena 3 newscast presents coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath, as aired on Antena 3 in Spain. This tape contains the first hour of Antena 3's live and continuous coverage, beginning abruptly at the conclusion of a regular news update at 2:57 p.m. Madrid time (8:57 a.m. EDT) and running to 4:07 p.m. (10:07 a.m. EDT). Anchor Matias Prat announces that an airplane has hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center in New York; he connects via telephone with Ricardo Ortega, Antena 3 correspondent in New York, who first describes the smoke emanating from around the 80th floor of the north tower before live images appear. Ortega announces that it is not yet know if this is an "accident" or "terrorism." (From this point on in the broadcast, images are exclusively those of events unfolding in New York and Washington, D.C.; all listed interviews, unless otherwise noted, are via phone with no images of interviewees.) As the camera is on the image of the burning tower, smoke appears on the left of the screen, first identified as another explosion, and then as a second plane striking the south tower. Prat and Ortega continue talking as the camera remains on the towers: Prat speculates that there may have been explosives aboard; Ortega reports what is being shown on U.S. television, describes the previous attack on the World Trade Center in 1993 and the lack of any particular alert in New York at this time (although admittedly there was some concern after the Yemen attack in October last year), and confirms that the planes were indeed hijacked. Next, Prat briefly talks with an Iberia Airlines representative who is unable to identify the plane caught on camera, but who says that only an experienced pilot could fly a plane that size. Prat then cuts to President George W. Bush's first statement about the "national tragedy," made from a school he is visiting in Sarasota, Florida; Prat asks Ortega to provide simulatenous translation as audio is not immediately available. Then Prat checks in with correspondents Emilio Sanz (audio i.d. only) in Moscow, Monica Prado in Brussels, Enrique Zimmerman in Israel, and JosŽ Angel Clavas (audio i.d. only) in London; although no governments have issued any official response, Zimmerman says that Israelis are already speculating a Mideast terrorist connection, particularly with the first year anniversary of the Palestinian Intifada approaching. Immediately following Clavas's report, Ortega announces that the Pentagon is on fire; images (provided by CNN) appear of smoke emanating from the Pentagon. Ortega reports that the White House has been evacuated and that the Pentagon is being evacuated; he says that it was another plane or a helicopter that hit the Pentagon. Then, he says that Reuters from Dubai reports that the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Further images show the Pentagon engulfed in smoke, while Ortega confirms that it was indeed a plane that struck and states that all Washington, D.C. government buildings are being evacuated. He also reports that Muslim extremists and Osama bin Laden are seen as potential suspects. The image returns to New York, where a billowing cloud of smoke is covering the area around the World Trade Center; it is a few minutes before both Prat and Ortega realize that the south tower has collapsed entirely (footage of the actual collapse of the tower is then shown). Antena 3 news director Ernesto S‡ez de Buruaga joins Prat in the studio to recap. S‡ez next speaks briefly with JosŽ Maria Guitierrez (audio i.d. only) of the U.S. Embassy in Madrid where only a few Americans have appeared so far. Continues with T:80876.
