ATENTADO A LAS TORRES GEMELAS DE NUEVA YORK {ASSAULT ON THE TWIN TOWERS IN NEW YORK} {SEGMENT OF MORNING COVERAGE, 1 OF 2} {TERRORIST ATTACKS} {SPANISH} (TV)
Summary
One of several segments of coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as aired on TV Azteca in Mexico. This segment contains the first two hours of Fuerza Informativa Azteca's live and continuous morning coverage of the terrorist attacks, from 7:58 a.m. to 9:59 a.m. Central time. "Hechos AM" morning news anchors Anchors Ana Mar’a Lomel’ and Ram—n Fregoso begin with breaking news that the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York has been hit by a plane, showing live images of the burning tower. While the anchors are discussing the possible causes of the accident, a second plane strikes the south tower and footage of the second plane crash is shown. Next, the anchors speak with Magdalena Ortiz who reports from New York on the confusion over the events, including why planes would be flying so close to the towers, how many people might be in the towers, and whether this is an accident or an attack. Immediately following the interview, Lomel’ reports that information has just come in that this is likely a suicide attack. Carlos Alberto Aguilar, a pilot, joins the two anchors in the studio remarking that the restrictions around New York City's air space and the clear conditions make it unlikely that this is an accident. Fregoso then details the history of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center by Muslim terrorists. The anchors report that the FBI confirms that the planes were hijacked and that all New York airports are closed. Clips recorded last summer of students and a teacher from a Muslim school discussing suicide attacks are aired. At 8:30 a.m. Mexican time, U.S. President George W. Bush's initial statement, made from a school he is visiting at the time, is broadcast with some audio difficulties. It is rebroadcast minutes later in its entirety with simultaneous translation. He condemns the attacks and ensures the public that a full investigation will take place of what has happened. The anchors continue to discuss the unprecedented nature of the attack, recalling the only other known accident of this kind in which a plane crashed into the Empire State Building in 1945. Ana Real reports from New York, with new information on the flights and conditions in the area, including communication difficulties. At 8:42 a.m. Mexican time, there is a report of a third airplane crashing into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.; footage of smoke rising in the distance is shown. The anchors report news from the Associated Press that the first hijacked plane flew out of Boston. Lomel’ announces that Reuters from Dubai reports that the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine has claimed responsibility for the acts. Ignacio Basauri reports from Washington that the White House is being evacuated and shows images of Air Force One, the presidential plane, being protected and guarded. He also reports that Muslim extremists and Osama bin Laden are seen as potential suspects. Live footage of the Pentagon is broadcast, along with continuing coverage of the twin towers. The anchors report that all flights have been cancelled and that remaining planes in flight have been instructed to land at the nearest airport. There is news from Amman that a US airplane was shot down in southern Iraq last Sunday, with no additional information. More images follow from the streets in downtown Manhattan including simultaneous translation of some eyewitness accounts. Fregoso reports that the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine denies responsibility for the attack. Genaro Pe–a, Marketing Director of the FAA in Houston, in a phone interview, states that they have received no order yet and that there will still be airplanes flying until an official order is sent to close all airspace. Edgar Mu–oz reports from Mexico City on the response of Mexican president Vicente Fox. Footage is shown of Fox condemning the attacks and expressing his solidarity with the victims. The anchors also report that Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, as well as Jacques Chirac, President of France, condemn the attacks. Reuters reports that the first airplane that crashed into the World Trade Center was a 767 plane, American Airlines flight 11, traveling from Boston to Los Angeles with 158 people. At 9:41 a.m. Mexican time, they report a fourth plane crash in Pennsylvania with no further information on the cause or the airline involved in the crash. They also report a possible fire in the White House and a car bomb in front of the Department of State in Washington, D.C. Maria Elena Garcia Villalobos reports from Los Angeles that things are generally calm there, but that officials are not speaking to the press; she also reports of a fourth crash being reported outside Washington. Basauri reports from Washington of a car bomb outside the Department of State, but has no further details as to injured. The report is interrupted by the collapse of the north tower; images of the scene, including people running away from the area, are shown. Later, Fregoso confirms reports that there was a fourth plane crash in Pennsylvania. Fregoso interviews via phone Stephan Sberro, professor of Middle Eastern Studies, ITAM specialist, who believes it is most likely a Muslim terrorist attack. This is followed by a conversation with Josie Shumake from the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, who reports that the embassy is open and that no threats have been made to any embassies outside the United States. There is a rebroadcast of the statements from President Bush and Vicente Fox. Ortiz reports from New York with her eyewitness testimony about the collapse of the towers and the conditions. The tape ends abruptly at 9:59 a.m. Central time with live images of the scene. Continues with T:71491.
