ATENTADO A LAS TORRES GEMELAS DE NUEVA YORK
{ASSAULT ON THE TWIN TOWERS IN NEW YORK} {SEGMENT
OF EVENING COVERAGE} {TERRORIST ATTACKS}
{SPANISH} (TV)
Summary
The fourth of four segments on this tape containing
morning, afternoon, and evening coverage of the
terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as aired on TV
Azteca in Mexico. This segment, beginning about an hour
and a half into the tape and running for 30 minutes,
continues Fuerza Informativa Azteca's evening coverage
of the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, from around
10:55 p.m. Central. (Time estimated based on previous
coverage.) "Hechos" evening news anchor Juan Carlos
Valerio and Rosa Mar’a de Castro for this segment of
"EU Bajo el Terrorismo" (The U.S. under Terrorism).
This segment begins with a report from Armando Guzm‡n
in Washington D.C. including images of military vehicles
guarding the capitol and statements from members of
the U.S. Congress. Alfredo Alvarez reports from Tijuana
that borders are closed and that security is tight.
Leonardo Curzio, in the studio with both anchors,
discusses whether this is a terrorist attack or a real
act of war. He compares this attack with the other
times that the United States has been under threat
directly on their land: Pancho Villa's rampage, the
Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and the Soviet threat
forty years ago from Cuba in the missile crisis. After
a break from the studio during which more footage of the
attacks is shown, Agust’n Rodr’guez reports on past
terrorist attacks directed at United States including
the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, the 1988
bombing of PanAm flight 103 that exploded over
Scotland, and the 1995 bombing of the Federal Building
in Oklahoma City. He also reports on the fall of stock
markets around the world including in Brazil, Argentina,
the United Kingdom, Germany, and Spain. Back in the
studio, Roberto Salinas, a political analyst, has joined
the two anchors and gives advice to individual investors
on how to act after these attacks. He recommends calm
and encourages people not to panic. They take a break
from the studio and show new footage from CNN of the
second plane crashing into the south tower. Yvonne
Romero presents more reports from Mexico on the status
of the airport and passengers who have not been able to
fly during this day. It includes an interview with JosŽ
Luis Uribe representing Benito Ju‡rez International
Airport in Mexico City. Hector Aguilar reports from
Cancœn on a press conference with Guillermo Mart’nez,
tourism secretary of the Mexican State of Quintana Roo
and Joaqu’n Hendricks, Governor of Quintana Roo, who
both argue for a consistent and professional response to
the tragedy. Finally, Rafael Aguirre, a Mexican
businessman, expresses his concern about the probable
decrease of tourism in the area, especially since more
than sixty percent of the tourists there are American.
