LA VERDAD DE LOS HECHOS 1998 {THE TRUTH ABOUT THE FACTS 1998} {PT. 1 OF 2} {SPANISH} (TV)
Summary
The first of two programs on this tape. The first part of a two-part year-in-review program, hosted by Javier Alatorre, covering the main national and international events of 1998. Alatorre begins the program with a greeting and a montage of images from the year. The first report is on the two weather phenomena known as El Ni–o and La Ni–a that affected the world this year to an unprecedented extent. An extensive drought associated with El Ni–o took place in many parts of the world, including Mexico, and killed animals and crops and caused forest fires. La Ni–a was blamed for floods that hit many areas of Mexico hard and strong hurricanes, such as Hurricane Bonnie in North Carolina and Hurricane George in the Dominican Republic; Hurricane Mitch, the worst hurricane of the year, affected Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala, leaving thousands dead and missing, and large areas devastated. Other areas hit with floods and deaths by this phenomenon were Papua New Guinea, India, China, Japan, and Yemen. Next, Alatorre covers the celebration of John Paul II's twenty years as pope and the pontiff's many international visits this year including Cuba, Nigeria, Croatia, and Mexico. (Images and clips of the Pope, his past activities, and his visits in 1998 are included.) The next report discusses the issue of safety in Mexico City. In a televised statement, President Ernesto Zedillo apologized to the Mexican people for not providing solutions to the increasing crime and police corruption; various highly publicized failures of the criminal justice system are reviewed. In August, Daniel Arizmendi was arrested for the kidnapping and torturing of many people; clips of a recorded interview with host Javier Alatorre in which Arizmendi spoke about his crimes and the reasons he carried them out are shown. The next report is a special section on the accomplishments of the TV Azteca Foundation throughout the year in helping promote education through the Azteca scholarship, gathering food that is wasted across the country for the campaign "Mexico Sin Hambre" (Mexico Without Hunger), and organizing events at universities for the campaign "Vive Sin Drogas" (Live Without Drugs). The next report covers drug trafficking crimes in Mexico. In news from Ensenada, Baja California, three families were mutilated in what seemed to be a group of drug traffickers getting even with the leader of a rival group. Two brothers, Luis and Jesœs Amezcua Contreras were arrested in another incident for trafficking with amphetamines. Also, Luis Palmas Alazar was sentenced to 11 years in prison for dealing marijuana and cocaine. Another person arrested for his involvement in drug trafficking was Flavio Romero de Velasco, former governor of Jalisco. In May, the United States uncovered a money laundering scheme in Las Vegas with Mexican banks involved. After meeting with Bill Clinton, President Ernesto Zedillo criticized the US response and its approach to dealing with drug trafficking between the two countries. The issues were presented to the United Nations later in the year. Footage includes Attorney General Janet Reno, President Zedillo, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright . The next segment discusses some of the talented people who died in 1998 in Mexico including Octavio Paz, winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1990; Senator JosŽ Angel Conchello; photographer Ram—n Bravo; and writer Elena Garba. The next report covers the Clinton - Lewinsky case in the United States including Clinton's apology for lying about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky and his possible impeachment. The final report in this part focuses on Frank Sinatra's death in May; clips of Sinatra's concerts and film performances are included.
