HECHOS 1996 {EVENTS 1996} {PT. 1 OF 2} {SPANISH} (TV)

Summary

The first of two programs on this tape. The first part of a two-part year-in-review program, hosted by Javier Alatorre, covering the main national and international events of 1996. Alatorre begins the program with a brief summary of the topics that will be covered and a montage of images from the year. The first report briefly covers the mistreatment of Mexican immigrants in the U.S., showing some footage of U.S. police beating a group of men and women caught driving across the border. The next segment covers a number of stories, including the following: improvements in the treatment of HIV and AIDS continue although the prognosis remains bleak; six atomic explosions were carried out in the South Pacific by France causing protests in that country, forcing President Jacques Chirac to cancel further testing. After two years of Ernesto Zedillo's government, the economic numbers have improved, but there appears to be little improvement in the quality of life of the people. The president has been on many trips to meet with international leaders, including one meeting with Pope John Paul II. In the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Mexican Fernando Segura won the bronze medal in the marathon, although the national soccer team lost to an African team. The games were marked by a bomb explosion on one of the stages, causing one death and over 100 injuries. In Rwanda, a clash between the army and guerrilla fighters left over one million dead. The next segment returns to domestic news, covering a series of climatic changes that caused first drought, nearly ruining crops and killing animals in the north of the country, and then heavy rains and hurricanes, which caused some flooding and destruction. In Iraq, the U.S. attacked strategic points after Saddam Hussein seemed to be disobeying the borders set after the Gulf War. In Mexico, the abbot Guillermo Schulenburg resigned from his position in the Church due to the pressure put on him after his declarations that the Virgin of Guadalupe did not really exist. Political reforms attempted by the government created tension between the different parties, while in the governing party some PRI members resigned and others were appointed. Laida Sansores, whose family included several past PRI representatives, switched to the PRD; Dante Delgado, former governor of the state of Veracruz, resigned after the scandal over an illegal appropriation of 400 million pesos; further developments emerged in the case of Raul Salinas de Gotari (the ex-president's brother), already serving time for the murder of political opponent Jose Francisco Ruiz Massieu. The following stories are also briefly covered: a group of students were attacked and killed in a camping trip; Bill Clinton was reelected in the U.S. after defeating challenger Bob Dole; the Oscar went to Mel Gibson for best director for "Braveheart," Nicholas Cage for best actor, Susan Sarandon for best actress, and a Mexican, Emanuel Lubeski, was nominated for best photography. Another segment briefly covers the following news items: a protest in Madrid, Spain, with thousands of sheep on the streets; Boris Yeltsin's bad health. The following domestic stories are also reviewed: the second anniversary of the killing of a group of farmers in the Mexican state of Guerrero; the existence of the Revolutionary Popular Group (EPR) and their unknown political intentions; a train crash that caused ten deaths and forty injuries; an oil spill of more than 100 thousand liters on March 14; the crash between two helicopters in Mexico City on March 18; the explosion on June 10 of an oil factory, also in Mexico City; the death of fourteen soldiers in the desert in Baja California due to the heat, while doing routine training. In Guatemala, a soccer game was the site of a fraudulent act in which false tickets were sold; when the spectators tried to enter the stadium by force, over 500 were crushed to death by the crowds. In England, Prince Charles and Princess Diana were officially divorced. Back in Mexico, a tribute celebrating poet Jaime Sabines featured the poet sitting and reading his poetry late into the night in the Beaux Arts Palace. Colombian President Ernesto Samper, suspended after being accused of financing his political campaign with money from drug traffickers, returned after this suspension was lifted. Host Javier Alatorre concludes the first part of this special annual program, to be continued the following day. Includes commercials. Continues with T:71627.
