MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SEMINAR SERIES, THE: NEW YORK RADIO FESTIVAL 2002: 9/11 {SEPTEMBER ELEVEN}: ONE YEAR LATER {TERRORIST ATTACKS} {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. Held in New York as part of the Eighth Annual Radio Festival and moderated by radio curator Ken Mueller, this seminar focuses on the effects the September 11 terrorist attacks have had on radio broadcasting, one year later. Mueller introduces a clip of apropos segments from the following stations: KYW 1060, Philadelphia; WWJ 950, Detroit; KMOX 1120, St. Louis; and Newsradio WRVA 1140, Richmond. Next, Mueller introduces the panelists: director of AM operations at WRVA, Randall Bloomquist; KMOX host Charles Brennan; KYW reporter David Madden; and WWJ news director Pam Woodley. The panelists discuss how each of their stations has handled programming since September 11, focusing on the coverage immediately following the attacks. They also talk about the local angles they pursued following the attacks; continuing, the panelists describe general changes at their stations that have resulted from 9/11. They also discuss the following topics, among others: how much coverage they currently give to the War on Terrorism; how much of this coverage they think is appropriate; and specifics on how their programming and regular protocols have, or have not, changed since 9/11. At this point, Mueller opens the seminar to questions from the audience. While responding to these questions, the panelists discuss: calendar journalism and covering anniversaries of big news events; to what degree the patriotic impulse of journalists should be upheld or subdued; the representation of different points of view on the air and how listeners respond; how budget cuts have been creatively managed; and how listeners have responded to changes following 9/11.
