CYRANO DE BERGERAC {TAPE 2 OF 2} {FRENCH} (TV)
Summary
Continued from T:72965. Tape two of two. A television
adaptation of Edmond Rostand's 1897 drama about Cyrano
de Bergerac, a seventeenth-century poet and cavalier
with an unfortunately large nose. This part begins with
a Capuchin priest giving a note from de Guiche to
Roxane, explaining that he has escaped his military
service and is hiding in a convent. Roxane pretends to
read it aloud, instructing the priest to marry her and
Christian on the spot, as per the letter. During the
marriage, a disguised Cyrano waits outside and delays de
Guiche from entering the house, revealing himself when
the ceremony is over. De Guiche responds by ordering
Christian and Cyrano to war with the other guards.
Before leaving, Cyrano promises Roxane to have Christian
write her every day. The next scene opens with the
cadets at camp, hungry and low on morale from a defeat
the night before. Cyrano lifts their spirits though
song, stopping when de Guiche enters. De Guiche boasts
of his battlefield feats of the day before, in which he
flung off his white plume to confuse the Spaniards.
After Cyrano rebukes his boasting by producing the plume
from his pocket (which he had retrieved on the
battlefield), de Guiche orders a sentry to indicate the
Spanish will attack in an hour, meaning sure death for
the cadets. Roxane appears with Ragueneau in a coach,
bringing food for the cadets. Alone with Christian, she
expresses her love for him that has grown through
reading the letters she thinks he has written -- though
Cyrano is their true author. A distraught Christian
sends Roxane away to lift the cadets' spirits, then
tells Cyrano that Roxane is no longer in love with him.
He accuses Cyrano of being in love with her. Cyrano
does not deny it, and Christian tells him that Roxane
will decide between the two of them. As Cyrano speaks
to Roxane, he hears news that Christian has been
wounded in battle. Before he dies, Cyrano lets
Christian know that Roxane had, indeed, chosen the young
cadet. At that moment, news of another death -- that of
Carbon de Casteljaloux -- presses Cyrano into battle.
The next scene opens 15 years later, outside the convent
in which Roxane has lived since Christian's death. Two
nuns speak about the effects Cyrano's weekly visits have
on Roxane. Roxane is inside with de Guiche, telling him
about the last letter from Christian that she wears next
to her heart. Le Bret enters, speaking of Cyrano's
troubles -- his health, his poverty, his enemies -- and
is told by de Guiche that some nobles are planning to
ambush and kill Cyrano. Ragueneau enters and tells them
that some lackeys have pushed a log off a balcony onto
Cyrano's head. As Le Bret and Ragueneau leave, Cyrano
enters with a hat covering the wound on his head. Like
he does every week, he recounts the news of the court to
Roxane, collapsing from his wounds in a chair before he
finished. With Roxane by his side, he asks if he can
read Christian's letter. As he reads the letter aloud
in the dark, Roxane realizes that it was Cyrano, all
along, who wrote the letters. After Ragueneau and Le
Bret return, Cyrano completes the news from the court,
this time including his death. Cyrano becomes
delirious, and begins brandishing his sword at invisible
enemies: lies, compromise, prejudice, etc. He dies,
exclaiming that there is one thing his enemies cannot
take away from him -- his white plume.
