VIEW, THE {CAROL BURNETT} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of daytime talk shows hosted by a multi-generational group of women, presided over by Barbara Walters, moderated by journalist Meredith Vieira, and including journalist Lisa Ling, attorney Star Jones, and comedian Joy Behar. After an introductory chat, the hosts discuss the day's "hot topics": Halloween costumes; Senator Paul Wellstone dying in a recent plane crash, and whether Walter Mondale is an acceptable replacement in the upcoming senate race; why those who "kvetch" live longer; and the Anaheim Angels' recent World Series win. Next, critic Tom Shales sits down with the women to promote his new book "Live From New York" about the backstage happenings at "Saturday Night Live." They discuss the following topics: why no one likes Chevy Chase; how the book is up to No. 2 on the bestseller list; Gilda Radner's character "Baba Wawa," which spoofed Walters; John Belushi and other cast members' drug and alcohol use; and his thoughts on the current state of television. Next, Carol Burnett and Linda Lavin of the Broadway play "Hollywood Arms" discuss such topics as: Burnett's writing of the script based on her mother's life; Lavin portraying Burnett's grandmother; the "bookie joint" her family ran when Burnett was eight years old; the kind of men Burnett's grandmother would date; and Burnett's deceased daughter, Carrie Hamilton, who co-wrote the script. Next, "The View Crew" makeup artists turn some of the show's staff into some Halloween favorites, such as a 1960's woman with an airbrushed "shirt" on her bare skin and bra, and a warrior Ork creature from "Lord of the Rings." Bill Geddie, executive producer, is then turned into the wizard Gandalf from "Lord of the Rings." "According to Jim" actress Kimberly Williams joins the women to discuss such topics as: what it's like working with Jim Belushi; her thoughts on "The Bachelor" dating show; her audition for "Father of the Bride" and how she almost didn't go; why she attended college even though she had become a working actress; and her upcoming wedding. Finally, Donna Lynne Champlin and Sara Niemietz of "Hollywood Arms" sing "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows," as performed in the play. Includes commercials.
