Summary
Tape one of two in continuing Canadian news coverage of
the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, two days
after the events. Anchor Peter Mansbridge opens with a
quick recap of the day's events before reporter Raj
Ahluwalia, live in New York, reports on the ongoing
rescue efforts at Ground Zero including an update from
New York City major Rudolph Giuliani. Next, Sasa
Petricic reports from Washington, D.C. on the search and
recovery efforts at the Pentagon, for both bodies and
the hijacked airplane's black box. David Halton reports
from the White House on U.S. President George W. Bush's
demeanor during the day, including his phone calls with
New York and world leaders, military preparations, and
Colin Powell's plans to locate suspected terrorist
mastermind Osama bin Laden. Next, Diana Swain reports
from Vero Beach, Florida, on the local flight school
where several of the hijackers were trained. Christina
Lawand reports from Ottawa on a "hidden" Canadian
connection to the attacks. Don Murray reports from
London on the reactions from Americans currently in
England. Norman Hermant reports on Canadians that may
have perished in the attacks, as well as speculating on
the death tolls for other foreign countries. Adrienne
Aresenault reports on the reopening of airports and new
safety precautions that will be implemented. Paul
Hunter reports from the Canadian/United States border
on the current backlog of trucks stuck at the border
crossing. Leslie MacKinnon, in New York, tells the
story of three Canadians that had been working as
investment bankers in New York when the attacks
occured. Neil McDonald presents a brief biography of
bin Laden. Finally, Russ Knutson reports on the impact
of the attacks on different parts of Canada. Continues
