GREAT PERFORMANCES: LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER: AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE AT THE METROPOLITAN OPERA {TAPE 2 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:76086.001. Tape two of two. One in this series on the performing arts. In this program -- one in a series of live broadcasts from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City -- the American Ballet Theatre performs at the Metropolitan Opera House. The third ballet "Theme and Variations," choreographed by George Balanchine, is from Tchaikovsky's "Theme and Variations" movement from Suite No. 3 for Orchestra. The ballet is performed by Gelsey Kirkland and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Next, Robert MacNeil interviews Gelsey Kirkland and Erik Bruhn, and they discuss the following topics: how Kirkland's dance interpretations change over time; the preparation involved for specific types of ballet (i.e., pure dance ballets versus dancing a character role); Kirkland's inspiration from other ballerinas, specifically Natalia Makarova; and Kirkland's recent publicity. Bruhn discusses the selection of ballets for this program, specifically "The Firebird," and the importance of a skilled choreographer. Next, the fourth and final ballet "The Firebird," choreographed by Michel Fokine, is performed.
