GREAT PERFORMANCES: LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER: ROSSINI: THE TURK IN ITALY {TAPE 2 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:76098.001. Tape two of two. One in this series on the performing arts. In this program -- one in a series of live broadcasts from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City -- the New York City Opera performs "The Turk in Italy," the English version by Andrew Porter. As Act II begins, Selim and Geronio meet to discuss Donna Fiorilla. Selim offers respite from Geronio's "weary" marriage by offering to purchase Fiorilla from Don Geronio as Selim suggests is Turkish custom. Don Geronio angrily refuses the offer. Next, Fiorilla forces Selim to decide between her and Zaida. Upset, Zaida runs off and Selim declares his love for Fiorella. The Poet then speaks with Geronio who will disguise himself as Selim at the upcoming masquerade ball and trick Fiorilla. Meanwhile, Narciso sings of his unrequited love for Fiorilla. As the masquerade ball begins, disguises lead to mistaken identities: Selim mistakenly takes Zaida for his love, Fiorilla; Donna Fiorilla mistakes Narciso for the Turk, Selim; and Don Geronio is confused as to "who his wife is." Geronio learns from the Poet that Fiorilla left the ball with Narciso; once Fiorilla discovers the identity of Narciso, she returns to the ball to find Selim. The Poet advises Geronio to send Fiorilla a decree of separation, banning her from his household. Fiorilla learns that Selim and Zaida have left Italy as she receives Geronio's separation letter. Distraught, Fiorilla faints. Geronio forgives Fiorilla and they are reunited. Selim and Zaida return and ask for Geronio and Fiorilla's pardon. All is forgiven and the opera ends in harmony. Lastly, the cast take their bows and the audience applauds.
