MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: 2003 TELEVISION DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL, PACKAGE 5: THE NAZI OFFICER'S WIFE
Summary
In 2000, The Museum of Television & Radio inaugurated an annual Festival devoted to the art and history of the television documentary. In 2003, the Museum is pleased to present premiere screenings of six documentaries that deal with the theme of personal expression, whether it be artistic, therapeutic, or both. Selections include profiles of literary lions Kurt Vonnegut and Gore Vidal; an exploration of Latino culture and its rich heritage; a biography of Marilyn Monroe drawn from previously unknown recordings; a chronicle of a writing workshop led by Eve Ensler in a maximum security prison; and a film based on the remarkable autobiography of Holocaust survivor Edith Hahn. The festival also includes a retrospective look at the Vietnam War and our ongoing youth documentary showcase "Docu-Jam." In addition, the Museum is introducing two new elements to the Festival: a workshop devoted to the art of the documentary pitch, and a special presentation of a "classic" documentary. Each Festival screening is introduced by the filmmaker and followed by a dialogue between the audience and the production team that will explore issues crucial to the craft and content of the television documentary.
"The Nazi Officer's Wife" Liz Garbus ("The Farm: Life Inside Angola Prison") returns to the Festival with an extraordinary and inspiring testament of perseverence in the face of adversity. Edith Hahn was a student in Vienna until the Anschluss brought Austria under Nazi rule. Separated from her family and forced underground, she tore off her yellow star, obtained falsified papers, and emerged in Munich as Grete Denner, a certified Aryan. There she met and married Werner Vetter, a Nazi Party member who promised to keep her precarious identity a secret. Drawing from Edith's personal archive, the largest of any Holocaust survivor, Garbus fashions a complex and riveting narrative of love, loss, and survival. (2003; 97 minutes)
