SUNRISE: STRIKE ON IRAQ {OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM}
{TAPE 3 OF 3} (TV)
Summary
Continued from T:76634. Tape three of three of this special Saturday Edition of Australia's Channel 7 "Sunrise" News program, in which news anchors David Kosh and Melanie Doyle, joined by foreign affairs expert Dr. Keith Suter, present coverage of the first day of the U.S.-led Coalition's "Shock and Awe" bombing campaign against Iraq. The tape picks up during presenter Natalie Barr's recap of the headlines, which includes footage of the bombing of Baghdad. Kosh, Doyle and Suter are joined by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute's Aldo Borger for a discussion of the levels of Australian troop involvement in "Operation Iraqi Freedom," particularly that of Australia's SAS. Channel 7 U.S. correspondent Mike Amor presents a video of U.S. troops and Iraqis ripping down a poster of Saddam Hussein in the Iraqi town of Safwan. The program goes live to Iraq's Ambassador to the UN Mohammed al Dhuri's press conference at the United Nations during which he criticizes the U.S.-led Coalition; U.N. journalist Bill Neely reports on the progress of the British and Australian troops with whom he travels towards Baghdad and presents footage of some of their activities of the previous night. Journalist Mark Davies presents a piece reviewing events of the Gulf War of 1990. Suter compares the 1990 Gulf War and "Operation Iraqi Freedom." The program also presents NBC feed of the "Today" show's Matt Lauer talking to embedded correspondent David Bloom about his travels towards Baghdad with the only tank brigade in the Persian Gulf. Kosh and Doyle present viewers' e-mails about the war and discuss Australian Commander Brigadier Maurie McNann's press conference before closing the program with a brief review of the developments of the day as covered in the program. The program is punctuated by half-hourly Australian weather reports and regional news updates and includes segments of press conferences held by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, U.S. President George W. Bush, U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and other political and military figures; presenter Natalie Barr reads headlines and presents correspondents' reports; reports from correspondents Dennis Linton, Mitchell Catlin, Paul Richard, and Tim Veersteegen are repeated throughout the broadcast.
