RUDY: THE RUDY GIULIANI STORY (TV)

Summary

A docudrama about the political life of former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani, told chronologically but interspersed with the events of his day on September 11, 2001. The program begins on September 10, 2001, as Giuliani ponders his future as his final term as mayor draws to an end. The next day, as soon as the first World Trade Center tower is struck by a hijacked plane, the mayor jumps into action, quickly arriving at the scene. Flashbacks begin in 1982 as Giuliani, then U.S. attorney general, meets television newswoman Donna Hanover and sparks immediately fly. By 1984, they have married and Giuliani begins the Herculian task of trying to rid New York City of the mafia.

In 1985, Giuliani's reputation grows as he busts both mob boss Joseph Bonanno and insider trader Michael Milken. In 1989 he makes his first attempt at being elected mayor, running against David Dinkens, but he is defeated. Dinkens's bad press allows Giuliani another shot at him in 1994 and this time he wins, but his marriage is slowly falling apart as he begins an affair with his press secretary, Christyne Lategano. Problems plague Giuliani's administration -- the police killing of Amadou Diallo, the discovery of his father's arrest in 1934, his diagnosis of prostrate cancer -- but the tragedy of September 11 leads to the mayor's finest hour.
