GOOD MORNING AMERICA (TV)
Summary
One in this early morning series that includes interviews, special features, and news. This episode, the West Coast edition of the broadcast, comes after the early morning announcement of the year's Oscar nominations. Host Charles Gibson and newsreader Robin Roberts, subbing for host Diane Sawyer, open the program. Entertainment Editor Joel Siegel discusses the year's Oscar nominations, running through the nominees in prominent categories. In video from the show's East Coast broadcast, Nicole Kidman's responds to her Best Actress nomination for "The Hours." Next, the program goes live to Brussels, Belgium, for a report on a special NATO alliance meeting. David Wright reports on the crisis caused by the United States' desire to invade Iraq as some fellow NATO countries put up roadblocks, with NATO member Turkey caught in the middle. Retired General George Joulwan discusses if such countries as France, Germany, and Russia are trying to "poke the President and the U.S. in the eye" by refusing to support America in giving missiles and other defense gear to Turkey in the event of war; and whether this "cleavage" could lead to the end of the alliance. Claire Shipman at the news desk reports on concessions Iraq has made in hoping to avert a U.S. attack. Dan Harris in Baghdad, Iraq, reports on the specifics of the concessions. Shipman also reports on suspicious activity near the Bay Bridge in San Francisco and on more investigations into the Columbia space shuttle disaster. Then, Tony Perkins presents the day's weather.
Next, Tommy Thompson, Secretary of Health & Human Services, speaks with Roberts from the Crisis Response Center in Washington, D.C., detailing how the center's staff can respond to a heightened threat matrix. He also gives a tour of the facility. Mike von Fremd reports from Houston, Texas, on the trial of local dentist Clara Harris, accused of intentionally driving over her philandering husband in order to kill him. Then, a taped clip shows Best Actress nominee Salma Hayek's reaction after she learned of her nomination for "Frida," as well as the fact that numerous Spanish-language films received nominations. The "Picture of the Morning" is from the annual Westminster Dog Show. Next, Sawyer speaks with Rihab Taha, nicknamed "Dr. Germ," an Iraqi microbiolgist said to have helped create weapons for Saddam Hussein. She answers questions on such topics as: whether she has created a smallpox weapon; whether there are mobile biological warfare laboratories, as repeatedly argued by Secretary of State Colin Powell; her thoughts on lying; whether she and other Iraqi scientists are being threatened by Hussein's regime; and her thoughts on Hussein. Then, Perkins again presents the day's weather.
Next, television and film star Jennifer Garner joins Gibson and Roberts to touch on such topics as: the martial arts master who helped her get cast on "Alias"; how ballet training was essential in learning fight choreography; her upcoming movie "Daredevil" and its complicated fight scenes; the three-pointed sai weapons she wields in the fight scenes; and her acting dreams. Next, Siegel presents scenes from the first finalist in the "Whole Lotta Love Stories" Valentine's movie contest: "Cupid in a Bottle." The show's second hour begins with Gibson and Roberts previewing the rest of the day's program. At the news desk, Shipman recaps the story on concessions Iraq has made in hoping to avert a U.S. attack. Wright, live from Brussels, discusses how the rift between the U.S. and European allies could continue in the future. Shipman then speaks with reporter Betsy Stark about the rising costs of driving and home heating. Then, Richard Gizbert reports from London on a lawsuit recently filed by Michael Douglas and wife Catherine Zeta-Jones over allegedly unauthorized photos of their wedding. Shipman also reports on the morning's Oscar nominations. Then, Perkins again presents the day's weather. Next, Gibson discusses "20/20"'s recent airing of a controversial Michael Jackson documentary, before some clips of it are shown featuring the pop star discussing how he treats his young children. Afterward, Gibson is joined by Harvard University visiting scholar Wendy Murphy, via satellite from Boston, who touches on such topics as: whether Jackson's children are truly happy; what bothered her the most about Jackson's behavior in the documentary; Jackson's former wife Debbie Rowe's defense of his parental skills; and "red flags" that might make one question Jackson's fitness as a parent. Next, in the day's "Healthy Woman" report, Dr. Lisa Callahan joins Roberts to discuss a recent study that linked the "typical, American diet" to increased cases of female colorectal cancer.
Next, a clip from earlier in the morning shows actress Marisa Tomei and Frank Pierson, the President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as they announced the 2002 nominees in ten major categories. Then, in a segment taped earlier, Hayek joins Gibson, Roberts, and Siegel via satellite from Paris to reveal if she shed tears after hearing about her nomination, and to discuss her joy upon learning that a longtime best friend was also nominated. Siegel discusses the significance of this year's nominations -- the internationalization of the awards, as well as the lack of studio films represented. Then, Perkins again presents the day's weather. Next, in a segment taped earlier, Kidman joins Gibson, Roberts, and Siegel via satellite from London to discuss the prosthetic nose she wore in "The Hours" and the nine nominations that the film received. Finally, Gibson, Roberts, and Siegel discuss why the highly-popular "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" didn't score a Best Picture nomination, before wrapping up the day's show. Also included are some text-based news briefs from ABCNews.com. Includes commercials. This program is closed-captioned.
