MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SEMINAR SERIES, THE: A CONVERSATION WITH LESLEY STAHL {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. Held at the Museum in Los Angeles, and moderated by Museum director and vice president Barbara Dixon, this seminar is a one-on-one sit down with television journalist Lesley Stahl. The evening opens with a screening of some highlights from Stahl's career, including her coverage of the following events and stories: the Watergate hearings, 1973; the shooting of President Ronald Reagan in 1981; the National Democratic Primary, 1988; "Face the Nation: The Feminizing of Society," 1984; "60 Minutes: World's Biggest Shopping Spree," 1992; "60 Minutes: Undercover in Romania," 1991; "60 Minutes: How He Won the War," 1996; and "60 Minutes" interviews with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (2002), fugitive terrorist Abdul Rahman Yasin (2002), and former Vice President Al Gore (2003). Afterwards, Stahl and Dixon chat about the following topics: how Stahl decided to become a journalist at age 26; the early years of her career at NBC and then CBS; being a woman in network television news in the 1970s; her coverage of the Watergate scandal for CBS News; her ten years as CBS News's White House correspondent during the presidencies of Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush; how the advent of CNN during the George H. W. Bush presidency changed the White House press corps; the relationships between the Clinton's and George W. Bush's administrations and their press corps; how Stahl came to "60 Minutes"; the progression of a "60 Minutes" story from conception to broadcast; the story Stahl found most interesting; and Stahl's most difficult interview. Dixon then opens the discussion to questions from the audience, covering the following topics: how Stahl nabs a sought-after interview; why the male to female ratio on "60 Minutes" is skewed; why "60 Minutes" is a great place to work; whether women will be as accepted as television journalists as men are as they age; the objectivity of news coverage of the Iraqi war and other War on Terrorism-related news items; how news "leaks" happen; and how Stahl was able to interview Abdul Rahman Yasin in Iraq in 2002.
