EL DIA DESPUES: RONALDO {THE DAY AFTER: RONALDO} {SPANISH} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of Spanish talk shows dedicated to soccer. Michael Robinson, Josep Pedrerol, and Joaqu’n Ramos Marcos host this edition which features in-studio guest, Brazilian forward Ronaldo Nazario de Lima, who joined Real Madrid two months ago. The program begins by posing the question, much bandied about in the press, of whether Real Madrid is in crisis. But first, the program reviews the week's results, including the following: clips from the Rayo Vallecano-Deportivo match, focusing on some questionable penalty calls and how Deportivo player Fran Gonzalez outshown his teammate Roy Makaay in play, and footage from Racing de Santander-Real Sociedad, in which Real Sociedad prevailed based on the play of Francisco Javier de Pedro and Darko Kovacevic. Ronaldo joins the hosts who begin with some light-hearted banter about Ronaldo's recent foray in a golf tournament and the possibility of Ronaldo doing a calendar as England's star player David Beckham has. The hosts and Ronaldo then watch highlights of the Valencia-Athletic Bilbao match where Valencia's Pablo Aimar distinguished himself with numerous assists and three goals of his own; Ronaldo comments on Valencia's strengths, noting that Madrid has "nothing to fear" despite Valencia's lead in the league and says that rumors that Madrid is in "crisis" are exaggerated. Highlights from a number of other matches are shown before the team turns to Saturday's Real Madrid 1-1 draw against Villarreal, where Madrid's Zinedine Zidane scored once, but tussled with Villarreal's Sergio Ballesteros several times. They discuss whether Madrid needs to sign another midfielder, a questionable penalty call again Claude Makelele which lead to the sole Villarreal goal, and team captain Fernando Hierro. Robinson questions Ronaldo closely about his play since joining Real Madrid (highlights shown), particularly the effect his injuries may be having on his characteristically explosive speed. Ronaldo good-naturedly refuses to be weighed on the program, a reference to the concern expressed that the player may need to lose some weight. The program ends by briefly discussing Barcelona's 6-1 trashing of Alaves, focusing on Carles Puyol as captain and the play of Patrick Kluivert. Ronaldo emphatically denies that he had any interest in returning to his old club of Barcelona while he was negotiating with Madrid to leave Inter of Milan, although he admits that Barcelona club president Joan Gaspart called him several times during the negotiations.
