MUSEUM OF BROADCASTING SEMINAR SERIES, THE: INSIDE MEDIA: JACKIE GLEASON "THE GREAT ONE" {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio (known at that time as The Museum of Broadcasting). Moderated by Robert M. Batscha, president of the Museum, this seminar examines the life of the recently deceased comedy legend Jackie Gleason. Panelists include Gleason's "The Honeymooners" co-stars Art Carney and Joyce Randolph, as well as one of the show's writers Leonard Stern and Gleason's wife Marilyn Taylor Gleason. After the introductions, a brief highlight tape, narrated by Art Carney, is shown honoring Gleason's career and featuring appearances by Milton Berle, Groucho Marx, and Jack Klugman. After the screening, each panelist makes a brief, personal remark. Then, Carney discusses Gleason's unique pacing. Stern talks about the fateful day Gleason decided to try his hand at penning a script. Randolph details fellow co-star Audrey Meadow's recent injury that prevented her from attending this seminar. Questions from the audience then lead to an examination of the following topics: Gleason's work with the show's writers; Gleason's improvisation skills; Carney's "non-Gleason" work; Carney being typecast as Ed Norton; Gleason drinking while on air; why "The Jackie Gleason Show" was moved from New York to Florida; Carney playing Felix Unger in the Broadway version of "The Odd Couple"; Carney changing his interpretation of Norton over the years; Gleason's musical abilities; the domestic violence implied in the famous "to the moon" line; Carney winning Emmy and Academy awards; each panelist's favorite "lost" episode of "The Honeymooners"; and "The Honeymooners" cast's patented outfits and catch phrases.
