10-8 {TEN-EIGHT}: BROTHERS IN ARMS {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere in this series about Rico Amonte, a former Brooklyn bad boy, who becomes a rookie deputy sheriff with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, under the tutelage of Senior Deputy John Barnes. This episode begins in Flatbush in 1987 with Amonte discussing his rough-and-tumble upbringing, which led to him nearly getting incarcerated. He subsequently moved to Los Angeles at his brother's urging, where he now does the policing. Responding to a noise complaint at a rundown grocery store, Amonte shows his skills in speaking to the man responsible for blasting music from his car stereo. The large man gives Amonte trouble and the rookie is forced to take him down with a choke hold. Quickly, Amonte learns from Captain Otis Briggs that the man was the tough veteran Barnes -- in a thuggish disguise -- and that the rookie may have gone overboard in what was meant to be a training exercise. Though still angry, Barnes is forced to admit that Amonte acted correctly in taking him down. The next day, at the Lasky Station, Amonte reports for trainee duty and the hazing from other officers immediately begins. Then, Amonte is introduced to his training officer: Barnes. Next, Amonte and the other officers meet with Lieutenant Kenneth Hurley, who discusses the previous night's cases. Then, a report comes in noting that an officer has just been shot. In the squad car, Barnes immediately begins giving Amonte tips on how to patrol the streets. Then, the two respond to a call where they find a bus pulled off to the side of the road. Approaching the wrecked vehicle, Amonte and Barnes find three gunshot victims inside. Then, the officers chase an armed man fleeing from the scene, pursuing him into an alley where he disappears. Ultimately, the man takes a bystander hostage, forcing Amonte to negotiate with him. The man eventually drops the hostage and heads to a rooftop, acting suicidal. Amonte, however, is able to talk the man off the building -- though not by taking the stairs. Later, Amonte and fellow trainees Gabriela Lopez and Chase Williams discuss their frustration in not being allowed to leave their cars for lunch. Meanwhile, Ryan Layne, Williams's training officer, and Matt Jablonski, Lopez's training officer, dine with Barnes and make fun of the trainees, recalling their own days as rookies. Barnes claims that he still hasn't figured out whether Amonte is skilled. Then, Barnes notices Amonte having a pizza delivered to the car, raising his ire. That evening, Amonte and Barnes are called to a gentleman's club where a stripper, Astrid Fonseca, reveals that a customer hit her for not having sex with him following a lap dance. Afterward, Amonte spots a domestic battery suspect that has been at large and another foot pursuit begins. Amonte disobeys the rules and leaves Barnes behind as his partner can't keep up with his pace. Alone, Amonte gets ambushed by the suspect and Barnes is forced to rescue him. Later, Barnes dresses down Amonte for not following protocol, temporarily taking him off the streets. That night, Amonte speaks with his older brother Angelo, trying to make sense of his situation. Angelo tells his sibling to "suck it up" and "be a man." Later, Amonte recounts his earlier troubles to Lopez and Williams. Then, Jablonski and Layne return to the station and pick on Amonte. Afterward, Fonseca comes into the station and realizes that Amonte is a trainee. She asks him out on a date, though Briggs sees her and later advises Amonte against such hookups. Soon, Barnes returns to the station with some hoodlums that may have seen a shooting at a bar. As Barnes tends to business elsewhere, Amonte is told to watch them. When the hoodlums act up and start a brawl, Amonte handles himself well. After Barnes joins the donnybrook, the men are quickly back under control, though Briggs questions who is responsible. Amonte takes the blame, duly impressing Barnes and leading to his return to the field. Includes commercials.
