L.A. DRAGNET {2003 SERIES}: DADDY'S GIRL {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The second season premiere in another update of this popular radio and television drama based on logs from the Los Angeles Police Department, narrated by the laconic Joe Friday. This episode begins on a breezy Wednesday morning in Los Angeles as Friday and detective Jimmy McCarron respond to the finding of a young woman's burned body at the Chatsworth reservoir. On the scene, Friday and McCarron find fresh blood, shoe prints, and tire tracks, forcing them to cordon off the area. Then, Friday is stunned when the body twitches. Doctors later tell him that the girl's burns put her in hypovolemic shock and that she only has a few hours to live. Detective Gloria Duran links the letter jacket worn by the victim to that of Red Rock High, where twelve kids missed school for the day. Two of the children are fourteen-year-old girls that could fit the description of the victim. Wade Stanton arrives at the station wondering if his daughter, Nina, is the victim. She is soon identified as such. The "curious" injury pattern on Nina's body suggests different assailants, though the coroner says her death was due to burns. Friday and McCarron question the grieving Wade, learning that he works dispatch at a nearby police station. He claims that her mother's death was the only unusual thing that happened to her recently. He reveals Nina's best friend to be Emily Ambrose and also notes that she babysat for Kevin O'Malley's son. Friday and McCarron track down O'Malley, finding some nasty cuts on his arms. O'Malley offers an alibi but Friday still wants a DNA sample. Meanwhile, Duran and Detective Raymond Cooper go to speak with Emily, also meeting the sassy Angie Braddock. Then, Emily's abusive father Earl returns home, upset to see two cops there. Emily reveals that Nina had been arguing with her boyfriend Greg Parenteau, a senior at Red Rock High. Duran and Cooper track down Parenteau, who claims he had been practicing football at the time Nina was murdered. Then, while under surveillance, O'Malley makes a move to leave town. McCarron tries to stop him and chases him down. Taking O'Malley into the station, Duran finds that his identification is false and his story doesn't wash. Checking his vehicle, Cooper finds several bricks of marijuana. Kevin finally comes clean, admitting he kidnapped his son from his ex-wife and moved to Los Angeles under a new identification. However, the detectives recognize that he is not the murderer. Then, Cooper finds that Nina's cellphone has been used since her death, with a man named Michael Kim making six calls to his ex-wife's beauty salon in Van Nuys. Finding Kim at a homeless shelter, the detectives are taken by him to the place where he found the phone. There, more blood is found as well as tire tracks and a dislodged grill fragment from a 1966 Mustang. Then, Wade arrives on the scene, having heard the call over dispatch. Friday tells Wade that he needs to give them some space. Inside an adjacent house, the cops find numerous ropes, ritualistic candles, and pure grain alcohol. Going to the liquor store nearby, Cooper and McCarron learn the purchaser of the liquor had numbers shaved into his head -- like Parenteau. Again speaking with Parenteau, he reveals that he bought the booze for his cousin, Angie. Later, McCarron learns that the Mustang belongs to Angie's parents. Going to speak with Maddy Braddock, Friday and McCarron find Wade on the scene. Speaking with Angie, she immediately admits to pouring gas on Nina, feeling no remorse. During interrogation, Angie claims to have been joking, but continues to be hostile to the detectives questioning her. Next speaking with Emily, the cops ask about her after-school activities with Nina and Angie at the abandoned "haunted house." Cooper and Duran also want to know why Nina's blood was found in the Mustang. Eventually breaking down, Emily reveals that her father knew exactly what the cops would say to her. Looking into Earl's past, Friday finds he has a lengthy criminal record. At Earl's house, Cooper finds an online account on Emily's computer, containing salacious e-mails between Emily and Nina. The detectives surmise that Nina was cheating on her lesbian lover Emily with Parenteau. Friday feels that, despite all the motive and evidence, the police still need more. Further interrogating a truculent Angie, she reveals how they injured Nina. Angie further implicates Earl, claiming that he gave Emily information on how to kill Nina. Then, Duran reports that Angie tried to commit suicide while in juvenile detention, leaving her unconscious and unable to appear in court. Then, Wade again comes to the station, curious how the case is progressing. He admits to having sorted through evidence, potentially polluting the crime scene. Afterward, McCarron discusses with Assistant D.A. Sandy Chang how their case will be in trouble if they now take it to trial. Friday thinks they need to find the murder weapon. Using the media, Friday thinks he can get Earl and Emily to take his bait and lead them to the discarded weapon. Earl eventually heads back to the reservoir, using a ruse to try and give Emily enough time to recover the weapon. McCarron locates Emily and an unearthed crowbar while Friday finds a buried gasoline jug. Afterward, Emily reveals that her sadness and anger over the breakup with Nina led to the killing. Meanwhile, Earl claims to Cooper that his daughter simply wanted to be dropped off to take a hike. Emily, refuses to sell out her father and Earl is allowed to leave. However, as soon as Earl is outside, he is shot dead by Wade, who is then charged with voluntary manslaughter. Includes commercials.
