LINE OF FIRE: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The pilot in this drama series about the ongoing battle between FBI agents and a crime syndicate in Richmond, Virginia. This episode begins with FBI agent Bert Somers chasing after a criminal, Charlie Miller. Charlie and Bert exchange shots, with each killing the other in front of Bert's partner, Amiel MacArthur. After the incident, Amiel calls Lisa Cohen, FBI special agent in charge of the Richmond division, to inform her of Bert's death. Meanwhile, Jonah Malloy -- boss of the Malloy crime syndicate -- tortures a football player that didn't point-shave a game as planned. Afterward, Jonah learns that Charlie is dead and thinks the mob may now be at war with the feds. Later, Thomas Shell, director of the FBI, helicopters into Richmond, immediately asking Lisa for the latest on the Malloy crime syndicate. She says they are trying to build a RICO case against them. At the same time, Donovan Stubbin, a lieutenant under Jonah, picks up Roy Ravelle after his release from a two-and-a-half year prison term. Meanwhile, Jennifer Sampson, FBI special agent in the Richmond division, tries to juggle work and family responsibilities. At the office, Thomas speaks to the Richmond agents about how to handle losing a fellow agent. Meanwhile, Jonah gathers his men, telling them that they will not attend the funeral but that they will take care of Charlie's family. Jonah claims the feds murdered Charlie while he was "minding his own business." Jonah tells Donovan that he wants no revenge for Charlie, before Donovan introduces Roy. At the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, trainees Paige Van Doren and Todd Stevens take a final exam. Afterward, Paige speaks with Todd, claiming she saw him cheat on the test. Todd blows her off. Meanwhile, Lisa, Jennifer, and Amiel discuss whether to attend Bert's funeral. Going to the conference room, Jennifer and Amiel speak with Archibald "Crazy Jazz" Lincoln, telling the criminal that his life is in danger. Four days earlier, Jonah learned that Crazy Jazz was the "dimebag lowlife" who supplied crack which was eventually sold to Jonah's nephew. Listening to a surveillance tape, Crazy Jazz wonders if the agents are trying to dupe him, but ultimately decides to work with them. Back at the academy, Todd speaks with Paige, revealing that he owned up to cheating and that now the two should move on. Todd asks Paige on a date but she shoots him down. Then, during water training, Paige gets stuck on the bottom of the pool and Todd rescues her. Paige must admit to Todd that she can't swim, although she eventually accomplishes the task after being told not to do it. Her insubordination leads to Paige going in front of the new agent review board. Paige is forced to answer to her "flagrant violation" before she discusses why she wants to be an agent, revealing that she was inspired by the death of her husband at the Pentagon during its September 11 attack. She pleads that she needs to graduate so that she can fight terrorism. Later, Donovan and Roy spy Crazy Jazz on the street and Roy kills him, as well as an innocent woman. Donovan is furious at Roy. Later, Todd runs into Paige on the train to Richmond, the location where both have been assigned. Paige is unhappy that she and the "piece of work" Todd are going to the same place. In Richmond, Paige meets Lisa, trying to join her task force team a week early. Lisa refuses the request, saying that Bert, the agent she's replacing, is "just buried." Meanwhile, Jonah is impressed to learn that Roy killed Crazy Jazz but upset at him for killing the woman. Jonah hires Roy on the spot. Later, Donovan tells Roy about the "Jew lady" Lisa that runs the FBI outfit in Richmond. That night, Paige joins Lisa for dinner, who acclimates her with some "shop talk." At the restaurant, Roy sends Lisa a drink before approaching them. Later, in the bathroom, it is revealed that Lisa knows Roy as he is an undercover agent that just spent time in prison for the FBI. Roy tells Lisa that the FBI needs to give him some money to support his work on the inside. Afterward, Lisa decides to let Paige begin work immediately. The next day, various members of the FBI team start their morning rituals as Paige rises early for her first day on the job. And as Jonah and his henchmen begin new machinations, they remain unaware of two situations: Crazy Jazz flying out of town under witness protection, and a visit to Bert's grave by "new hire" Roy. Includes commercials.
