EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION: POWERS FAMILY {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere in this reality television series, a spin-off of "Extreme Makeover," in which a family's entire home is made over by a team of builders and designers in just seven days. Team leader Ty Pennington begins by telling his team about the Powers family of Santa Clarita, California, whose house they will renovate. Family friends Steve Burgess and nurse Blanche Lindsay explain how young daughter Olivia Powers was diagnosed with leukemia, sending the Powers into a tailspin until Olivia went into her current remission. Early on day one, Ty gives the family a "wake-up call," exciting the entire Powers clan. The family is to be sent on a vacation to the Bahamas while Ty and his team fix the house. Then, the Powers -- father Rodney, mother Kristen, and children Brittni, Reid, and Olivia -- show Ty their ramshackle one-floor home. Meanwhile, Ty's design and building team speculate on how to improve the house. Interiors/glamour guy Michael Moloney talks about making things fabulous by being the "candy man." Constance Ramos discusses how her building and planning will be important to the team. Paul Dimeo, the carpentry and "nuts & bolts" expert, details how he tries to make the designers' plans a reality. Tracy Huston discusses how she finds interesting things with her shopping skills. Preston Sharp, the exterior and "big ideas" guy, lists derogatory names he could be called for his attention-getting landscaping skills. Once the Powers are gone, Ty's team immediately gets to work discussing their makeover plans, wanting to fashion daughter Brittni's bedroom with a tiki theme and, in Reid's room, utilize the "bed" of Rodney's beloved old truck. Ty gives Olivia a call, telling her that her new room will remain a mystery until it is unveiled upon her return. Ty also thinks that the backyard should feature a giant pirate ship with a slide leading into the pool. On day two, the team's plans are put into action as the demolition crew arrives, headed by twin brothers Pat and Mike Shinn. Meanwhile, Michael and Tracy go around Los Angeles looking to purchase items for Brittni's room. At the same time, clips show the Powers having fun in the Bahamas. That night, Preston returns with some pricey purchases and soon the team is bickering about their job responsibilities. On day three, Ty asks that real progress start being made on the rebuilding process. Soon, Tracy and Michael are having issues with Preston usurping their jobs while Pat and Constance are upset by Preston's delays in designing the front yard landscape. By day four, it is time to begin painting and furnishing the house. However, the team is still angry at Preston having yet to make a drawing for the landscape. Then, Ty begins working on the mystery pieces that will go in Olivia's room. That night, since he's living on-site, Paul takes a secret dip in a neighbor's jacuzzi. On day five, Paul gets in a spat with Preston when he borrows his expensive chisel without permission. By day six, the house is nearly finished, save the pirate ship, the front yard, and the interior painting. Ty enlists some neighborhood kids to help paint the rooms' walls. On day seven, the other team members are pleased that Preston has lost his voice, with Michael trying to take over for him. Nevertheless, Preston continues to annoy the team with his antics. Then, the Powers head home while Ty's team rushes to have their house finished in time. Clips show the "before" and "after" shots of the Powers' home. Then, Ty greets the Powers' limo as it pulls onto their block. The Powers are amazed by their new home and the pirate ship above the swimming pool. Then, Ty finally reveals Olivia's surprise room makeover. Ty also presents Rodney with a new truck. Commercials deleted.
