I WANT A DOG FOR CHRISTMAS, CHARLIE BROWN (TV)

Summary

An animated Christmas special featuring the "Peanuts" gang. The program begins with Snoopy and Woodstock sledding in his dog bowl. Rerun Van Pelt discusses how he has to dodge questions in school about his "weird, crabby" older sister Lucy and brother Linus "who drags a blanket around." Rerun doesn't like how he doesn't get to exercise the thirty-three and a third percent of his opinion among the children in his family. Later, in kindergarten, Rerun is excited to do crafts. Rerun speaks with the "cute little girl" beside him, telling her they should go to Paris. Later, Rerun gets called into the principal's office and is accused of harassing the little girl. Returning home, Rerun reveals to Lucy that he got "fired," which she translates into a school suspension. Luckily, Christmas vacation starts the next day. Rerun decides that it is time their parents let them have a dog. Rerun writes a letter to Santa asking for a pooch. Later, Rerun realizes it is "B of the B day" -- back of the bike day -- something the youth hates due to his mother's poor biking. During his ride, Rerun uses the time to think about life, like how he sometimes goes a whole day without ever touching the ground. Meanwhile, Lucy goes to flirt with Schroeder -- to no avail -- as he practices the piano. Later, Rerun, Charlie Brown, and Snoopy frolic, with Charlie wondering why he can't just have a normal dog. Rerun questions Charlie as to whether Snoopy has any canine relatives. Charlie tells tales of sister Belle of Kansas City; brother Marbles, who went flying with Snoopy and became ill; brothers Andy and Olaf, who trashed Snoopy's home before becoming Alaskan sled dogs; and older brother Spike, who lives in the desert. Rerun asks Charlie if he can play with Snoopy, who readily agrees. Later, Snoopy no longer wants to "romp" in the snow with Rerun, tired of the boy's idea of fun. Rerun continues begging his mother for a dog, but she refuses. Rerun thus tries to buy Snoopy from Charlie. Later, Rerun and Lucy go to check out "Santa," actually Snoopy in costume with Woodstock as his "secretary." Lucy assaults Santa with questions regarding St. Nick's logic-defying traditions. Rerun tells Santa that all he wants for Christmas is a puppy. Later, after Lucy says that dogs are a lot of trouble, Rerun questions Charlie about the responsibilities of owning a pooch. As Sally goes on about the problems of donning winter apparel, Rerun continues trying to figure out a way to get a dog in time for Christmas. Meanwhile, Snoopy gets a letter from Spike, whom Rerun decides to adopt. Spike sets out on "a painful journey" with his "friend" the cactus toward Snoopy. Lucy still thinks Rerun is crazy and that their mother will never let him have Spike. Finally, Spike arrives with the cactus. Lucy can't believe how thin and miserable Spike looks and opts to fatten him up. Rerun begins to play the same games with Spike that he once played with Snoopy. Spike even keeps Rerun company on B of the B day. After Rerun's mother decides that they can't adopt Spike, Charlie takes Spike around the neighborhood and tries to find a home for him. However, no one wants to possess such a pathetic-looking creature. Spike heads back to his home in Needles. To help Rerun forget about Spike, Lucy enlists her brother to be in the Christmas play, reciting one line about the star of Bethlehem. Ultimately, Spike gets home in time to celebrate Christmas with the cactus. Rerun then returns to Charlie and asks if he can play with Snoopy again. Snoopy relents, but with enough conditions that Rerun wonders "if a dog is too much trouble after all." Includes commercials. This program is closed-captioned.
