Summary
This Peabody Award-winning documentary program -- produced by MTV as part of their "Fight for Your Rights: Protect Yourself" AIDS prevention campaign -- presents the social history of HIV, "told by the people who live it." Throughout the program, HIV sufferers and their family members discuss how the virus affects them. (The documentary is immediately preceded by a public service announcement, entitled "Roller Coaster" and also produced by MTV for their campaign, which equates having sex without a condom to riding a roller coaster with the safety bar up.) In the opening segment of the documentary, "How you get it, how you don't," the numerous truths and myths about contracting the disease are discussed. Next, the importance of celebrities Rock Hudson and Magic Johnson announcing their contraction of the disease are talked about. Then, Judd Winick discusses the "historic" casting of AIDS sufferer Pedro Zamora on his season of "The Real World: San Francisco." Next, the documentary talks about how the death from AIDS of seminal gangsta rapper Eazy-E (nŽ Eric Wright) shook the hip-hop community. Bono's work with President George W. Bush to combat HIV in third world countries is also discussed. The program ends by discussing how you can protect yourself from HIV. Includes public service announcement.
