Summary
A bilingual documentary about the life and work of Spanish architect Antonio Gaud’ which features profiles of the buildings he designed, interviews with modern-day Gaud’ experts (in Spanish, with no subtitles), and silent reenactments of scenes from Gaud’'s life. A narrator speaks in English over footage, providing biographical and historical information, detailing Gaud’'s life and work in chronological order from childhood to death, and mentioning the historical movements and events that influenced him. Topics discussed include the following: Gaud’'s childhood disabilities of rheumatic arthritis and anisometropia (a condition in which the eyes have an unequal refractive faculty); his schooling in Barcelona and introduction to Catalan nationalism; his first commissioned work (La Mataronense); his relationships with his cousin Rosa Egea and his first love Pepeta Moreau; the relationship between the Spanish bourgeoisie and the Catholic Church; the partnership between Gaud’ and his chief patron Eusebi GŸell; the Palau GŸell, one of his well-known buildings; the rise of anarchism in Barcelona in the 1890's; Gaud’ projects Colonia GŸell, Park GŸell, and Casa Milˆ (La Pedrera), workers' riots in Barcelona over the looming war with Morocco in 1909 and Gaud’'s resultant depression; the deaths of Gaud’'s father, cousin, and of his patron GŸell; his deepening Catholicism toward the end of his life; and his final years of work on the Sagrada Familia Temple, including his untimely death when run over by a street car, which left the Sagrada Familia unfinished. The program ends with an aerial view of the Sagrada Familia, over which production credits roll.
