DICK CAVETT SHOW, THE {ELAINE STRITCH} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of interview programs hosted by urbane raconteur Dick Cavett. In this program, Cavett and his guest, actress Elaine Stritch, address a variety of topics, including: why Stritch took up residence in London after performing there in Stephen Sondheim's "Company"; her friendship with playwright Noel Coward; how she learned to inject herself with insulin upon learning she was diabetic; her courtship with actor Ben Gazzara; marriage to actor John Bay when she turned 45; why she still insists on smoking cigarettes; how she stopped drinking, and whether she was actually an alcoholic; how drinking a whiskey soda at age 15 made her realize that alcohol could be a crutch; and her hardship in putting "Ladies Who Lunch" on the soundtrack of "Company." In the final segment, Stritch sings Sondheim's "Anyone Can Whistle." A promo for Cavett's interview with Stritch follows the show's end credits.

(Cavett hosted several talk shows under the title "The Dick Cavett Show," which aired on ABC from 1969 to 1972, on PBS from 1977 to 1982, on the USA network from 1985 to 1986, and on CNBC from 1989 to 1995. During 1973 to 1975, the show aired irregularly as part of "ABC's Wide World of Entertainment." Other versions of "The Dick Cavett Show" include a variety series on CBS in 1975 and a talk show on ABC in 1986.)

Cataloging of this program was made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
