BROOKLYN BRIDGE: NO TIME LIKE THE FUTURE {SERIES FINALE} (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic series about a middle-class Jewish family living in Brooklyn, New York, in the 1950s.
In this episode, the boys watch the Yankees battle the Milwaukee Braves in a World Series game which gets interrupted by the ominous news bulletin that the Russians have launched Sputnik into outer space. The adults are immediately stunned, upset that the United States has fallen behind in the space race and fearful of the Soviets' actions.
The children go down to Sid's to discuss the ramifications of Sputnik's launch. Katie and Mary Beth are impressed by the scientific achievement while Benny, Warren, and Alan voice trepidations. Confusion continues to reign as the satellite orbits the Earth. Phyllis doesn't want George to go to work that evening "just in case."
Later, as Sputnik begins to pass over the United States, the Silvers and their friends gather around the television, uncertain of what will happen. Alan and his friends discuss whether Sputnik will lead to their deaths. Thinking they could die, both Warren and Benny profess some secrets. Meanwhile, Nicholas and Nathaniel address what to do about the "bad guy" Russians, even as Sophie continues with her own solution: baking cookies. Later, as the kids continue to reveal their secrets to clear their consciences, Katie reveals that she kissed a nineteen-year-old at a party the previous month. Alan is upset and Katie has to console him and explain her actions, leading to a kiss.
As Sid comes across Sophie in the hall, he proposes a truce between them, which she dismisses. Meanwhile, the adults begin to discuss the Russians' intentions with only a minute to go until Sputnik's pass. Sputnik's arrival proves anticlimactic, and soon everyone has learned that it was never a threat. Sophie notes that at least the "crisis" brought the family together. Commercials deleted.
