Summary
Jamie Rubin and Mishal Husain host this documentary series that investigates contemporary global, political, and social issues. In this episode, filmmaker Mandy Jacobson reports from South Africa on the economic changes that have occurred since apartheid's end a decade ago. First, the program focuses on Humphrey Khoza, the chief executive officer at Uthingo Consortium, a combination of local South African empowerment groups and international lottery experts. He discusses Johannesburg's burgeoning economy; the rarity of being a black CEO; and the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) movement. He also discusses the lottery that his company created, South Africa's first. Next, the documentary focuses on how the lottery has helped give employment to blacks that were unemployable a decade ago. One such lottery employee, Zola Cwati, a field service technician, discusses her job, and how excited she is to be allowed to work. The program then lists the ultimate goals of BEE, including: getting better jobs for blacks, increasing economic growth, and helping improve new technologies, such as cell phone usage among the black community. Monika Steinlechner, a corporate financial manager for one of South Africa's cell phone companies, discusses why her company is interested in reaching out to the blacks in South Africa, noting their huge potential. At the conclusion, Husain sits down with Susan Rice to discuss black empowerment in South Africa.
