COYOTE WAITS (TV)

Summary

This drama, based on a novel by Tony Hillerman, follows two Navajo policemen as they race to unravel a complicated web of greed and murder. Officer Jim Chee ignores the garbled distress call of a friend and fellow officer because he is flirting with a local woman. That action leads to the death of the fellow officer, with Chee arriving on the scene too late to save him. Instead, he finds Ashie Pinto, an elderly Navajo tribesman, intoxicated and attempting to flee the scene with the murder weapon. Chee is greatly affected by his lack of response and begins doubting his abilities as a police officer. To redeem himself, he immerses himself in the case, trying to discover if the jailed Pinto has been falsely accused of the crime. Also enlisted in the investigation is Joe Leaphorn, a police force veteran considering retirement. Leaphorn's time must be divided between police work and caring for his sick wife, who happens to be related to Pinto. As more clues, and more bodies, accumulate, Chee and Leaphorn race to find the truth behind the mystery.
