ST. JUDE CHILDREN'S RESEARCH HOSPITAL: FIGHTING FOR LIFE {MARLO THOMAS} (TV)

Summary

This program documents the cases of six children with cancer at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Hosted by Marlo Thomas, daughter of the Memphis hospital's founder, Danny Thomas, the show combines first-person accounts of cancer treatment with a history of the hospital's origins. Thomas introduces 10-year-old Camilla, who is waiting to receive a bone marrow transplant to allay her acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Complicating her case is that, due to a genetic abnormality, Camilla's body cannot tolerate high doses of chemotherapy. Guest Alan Alda introduces three-year-old Ben, whose very aggressive brain tumor leaves him with a twenty percent chance of survival. Guest Reba McEntire presents young Hayden, who has also has a very aggressive brain tumor, as he undergoes high doses of chemotherapy. Alda later presents seven-year-old Brandon, who has osteosarcoma, the most common form of bone cancer in children, and must have his leg amputated. Guest Amy Grant sings for a group of children at the hospital, after which 12-year-old Ali, tells how she has had cancer for seven years, leading to a bone marrow transplant from her mother. Finally, Thomas introduces three-year-old Corbin, who has a malignant cancer in the form of a bump on his back, gets chemotherapy, then undergoes surgery. Each of the children's case resolutions is documented, concluding with Thomas's request for donations to allow further research. This program is closed-captioned.
