MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: 2006 WILLIAM S. PALEY TELEVISION FESTIVAL: ENTOURAGE {TWENTY-THIRD ANNUAL {23RD}} {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This evening honors "Entourage," a comedy series about burgeoning movie star Vincent Chase and his entourage of buddies -- E, Johnny Drama, and Turtle -- that follow him through all of his Hollywood adventures.

Host Christy Carpenter (executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Museum) offers opening remarks before introducing William C. Paley, son of Museum founder William S. Paley. He offers comments about the program, after which Carpenter brings film critic Elvis Mitchell to the stage.

Mitchell, who serves as the evening's moderator, introduces the panelists: executive producer/creator Doug Ellin; director Julian Farino; and cast members Debi Mazar (Shauna), Jerry Ferrara (Turtle), Kevin Dillon (Johnny "Drama" Chase), Adrian Grenier (Vincent Chase), Kevin Connolly (Eric "E" Murphy), and Jeremy Piven (Ari Gold).

Next, Ellin introduces two episodes from last season, "The Sundance Kids" and "Exodus," which are both screened in their entirety. (For synopses and credits, see T:87328 and T:87716.)

After the screening, the panelists discuss topics which include: how James Cameron was convinced to appear as himself on the show; Farino's feelings on directing Cameron; the idea to set an episode at Sundance; how each actor's character was fleshed out; if Piven meant for Ari Gold to mirror real-life Hollywood super-agent Ari Emanuel; the casting process; the show's dramatic growth between seasons one and two; whether Grenier's escalating career lets him relate to Vincent's status as a heartthrob; the show being based on the real-life antics of movie star Mark Wahlberg and his buddies; and the trick to getting celebrities like Bob Saget, Chris Penn, and James Woods to appear on the show as themselves.

Questions from the audience lead to a discussion of the following topics: the cast and crew's reaction to watching the show with an audience; what Ari Emanuel thinks about Piven's portrayal; who came up with the title of "Aquaman" for the Cameron movie that Vincent would star in; the work process on an HBO show, as compared to that of a network program; where the catch phrase "hug it out, bitch" originated; the lack of female nudity on the show; and how scenes for an episode were shot at the Staples Center during a U2 concert.

Cataloging of this program has been made possible by Verizon Communications.
