Summary

The second of four episodes on this tape. One in this series of programs designed to help parents and child care providers as host Debi Gutierrez and guests share ideas, solutions to problems, and learning opportunities for children about to enter kindergarten. In this episode, Gutierrez and caregivers Mechelle, Carol, and Sandy address the importance of sand and water play, assisted by Mike Salas, early childhood development specialist and pre-K and kindergarten teacher. The discussion includes: the benefits of providing frequent opportunities for a child to play in sand and water; how water play encourages exploration; incorporating household items into sand and water play; the scientific learning resulting from such activities; and how to bring sand and water play indoors. In the closing segment, preschool teacher Alec Colchico demonstrates various sand and water activities. This program is closed-captioned.
